How can they do this I thought this was ilegal? Why couldn't I bleach one out I killed in my back yard? 410$ hasn'nt hit the reserve JEEVEES I need to quit work and follow the basterds around till there horns fall off..........

It's illegal in Mississippi. Here's the law:


SEC. 49-7-51. Sale of game birds, animals or fish.

It is unlawful for any person to buy or sell or to offer for sale, exchange for merchandise, or other consideration, within this state, any game birds, game animals, or game fish, or parts thereof, named in this chapter, whether taken within or coming from without the state, except as specifically permitted by law or regulation. However, the skins of opossums and raccoons may be bought and sold during the open season on those animals, and the skins and sinew of deer may be bought and sold at any time.

A violation of this section is a Class I violation and is punishable as provided in Section 49-7-141.

Big business in selling bands. I took my bands off my lanyard this year after a buddy had his stolen. Since you can't get much from the pawn shops for a Haydells DR85, I figured they stole it to sell his bands.

Hey GC I got on e-bay just to see what I could. There must have been at least 50 entries selling bands. One Jack Miner off a Canadian you could buy now for $80.00!!! I have traded guys from Arkansas Canadian bands for duck bands like trading baseball cards but I would never sell any or buy any. They also had one for sell off a brown pelican. Can you hunt them??? And if no, how the hell did they get them?

At one time (in the early '70's) the F&WS use 17 different sizes of bands from robins to swans. Mortality takes-on several forms besides hunting...i.e. hit by a car, disease, TORNADOS, among many natural causes. You just have to be in the right spot at the right time to recover a band. Of course, in unusual recoveries (like eagles, pelicans and such), you would want to notify local agencies so they could inspect the bird to see what the cause of death was.....helps managers determine critical influences on the population.....much the way duck bands are used. I'm sure they would allow you to keep the band as a token souvineer.

Anatidae's right that bands can be used to mark just about any size bird (even as small as hummingbirds). The aluminum leg bands are issued by the USFWS, but are used not only by USFWS personel, but also by research scientists conducting studies on various species. The aluminum bands (and also colored plastic leg bands,neck bands, wing tags, nasal tags, etc) are used for mark and recapture studies as well as for individual identification from a distance. Individuals are (and have been for a long time) using this as a research tool not only in the US, but all over the world. So, if you find a banded bird (whether its a game bird or not), you should always report the number to the USFWS, as information like this is very important to our understanding of many things about avian populations. They almost always allow you to keep the band, and will always send you a certificate of appreciation that gives specific information about who banded the bird, where it was banded, and the age, etc. about the bird.
Boy, as for selling duck and goose bands on e-bay, sounds pretty lame to me, and I wonder what the USFWS thinks about this . . .? At the very least, I hope the numbers get reported.
By the way . . . if any one sees any bright yellow "tweety birds" with colored leg bands, right down the sequence of the colors and let me know!
