ARREST THREAT FOR CHOTARD HUNTERS
Chotard was still the river till the 1937 flood! Abermarle cut off in like 1897
And yes the natural banks are not far inside the willows in some places. Of course on the east bank (the high bank) it's very definitive. But on the west bank its not. Like I said go into it when the river is out of it and look You will see it. It's as plain as the nose on your face! It's at about 15-16 foot on the Vicksburg guage. You look at that stage and see how far or little trees are in the water and that's about all you have to play with PERIOD! Anything beyond that is trespassing.
The deal with Gassoway is a little more than someone just coming in out of the river too! They came across the man's fields blew out several dams went down several miles of ditches to get to this lake. It's not like it was very navigable! It's clearly marked where it crosses from MS to LA also. It was like that before Mr. Bill bought the place too! We bought our property over there back in the 30's and it's always been some kind of controversy over it. For the most part nothing was ever said till he started making some rather expensive improvments and folks started getting destructive with some of those. Then he really clamped down. He's fought with the state of LA over there before he died too. They are not trying to pick on anyone just protect their investment. They are nice people too. Just like the folks that run Tara. But rights right and wrongs wrong. Will's running it now and they are pretty strict when it comes to going back in there cause they do do a lot of duck hunting in there.
I hate to say it, but you are wrong about about the west bank of Chotard. If that and the east banks were the original banks, you would have had a very narrow river at that point. What happened is that once the river sought another channel, successive flooding events caused the west bank to build east (towards the center of Chotard) in a series of naturally occuring levees. Each new levee created a swale or pothole behind it, which was often silted in over time. If you can ever take a look at some Corps maps, they will show the old "meander" scars, which helps to understand the process a little better.
Whether you agree or not, the ordinary high water mark is the limit to which the public can use the water for recreation, etc. Title to the land under that water still rests with the riparian land owner, which is not in question. If the arrestees at Gassoway did indeed do what you said, then they should have been locked up and the key thrown away. If they had accessed it from the river, then they would have been okay based on the way the law was written. Most of us merely want to be left alone to pursue our sport as far from others as we can be. Unfortunately, the slob hunters who destroy property, etc. create the real problem for the rest of us.

Excuse me it cut off in the year 1913 but iwas still partially open to the river till at least the 1930's. There used to be concrete revetment all on the east bank of Chotard put there by the Corps. They didn't start using that till 1932.
But besides that we are not talking about what the river use to be when Chotard was the river. You need to go back and read all the opinions that have been written on this subject. It says the NATURAL boundries of the lake. That means the banks as they are now not way back when!

That's what makes this country great, those that have want more and those that don't want to ride in the truck with them and if they can't,run them off the road. Greed is the outdoorsmans creed.
You can believe this, if you owned fifty acres in the same location and you called the same sheriff to deal with so called tresspasser's, he or nobody else ain't coming. Too much trouble with no possible payback. I don't know if this sheriff likes bow hunting but if he does I bet I know where he'll be hunting. It's the American way! Don't you just love it!

Damn Seymore...dont be a hater. Those guys over there would love to teach you how to shoot a bow or is that to easy for ya?!?!
Not hatin', just calling it like I see it. Don't need to be taught how to shoot a bow as I've been bow hunting for over 15 years. Started with a Bear Whitetail Hunter and now have a Mathews Switchback. Shoot Goldtips with Spitfire 100 gr., whisker biscuit, trophy ridge flatliner, and a Trufire back tension release. With the mechanical blades and light on the flatliner, I don't think they would even allow me on those hallowed grounds.
Don't need to be taught how to shoot a bow and certainly am not going to pay some exorbitant price for it. In fact I have introduced several on this board to bow hunting, helped them get set up, and gone hunting with them. I also didn't charge them one damn thing.
Except Money still owes me a duck hunt.

.....i sure as hell hope that all those La GW's are patrolling lake Lee, Chotard, and all the oxbows that border LA/MS......because if this is true, then they best be doing it....
But, beside the point, as an avid Chotard hunter, THIS IS BULL CHIT!!!!
funny, as how last year I was scouting all the areas named in the early season, and stopped by a La Game warden well into the willows, was 'just checking' my license to make sure that if I had a MS license I wasnt carrying a gun since it was just LA season......I have been an avid hunter of chotard for a few years now, and this is COMPLETE BS!!!!!......I dare a MF GW from La to give me a ticket.....first off, it wouldnt stand up in court, and secondly, I ve got a 31 year GW uncle who has gotten me off for worse....and i will certainly be revisting this topic with him when he gets back from his guided LA duck hunt (go figure)......
as far as respect for a bowhunter 80 yards away? I would move no doubt...that guy paid money, and out of respect, I would move.......but as far as me not having access to that water in the willows? NOPE, that is not true.....not one bit of it....and those "@#$%#" can write me all the tickets they want....in fact, when I do hunt there again in a few weeks, I am going to carry a copy of the DA's letter, and I am going to make it a point to bring my camera and my camcorder, so when I do get harrassed, I am going to make it a point to get those Dumb MF on camera writing me a ticket.....there is no justification on this up to 30 feet at Vicksburg....
and by the way, has anyone actually been ticketed???
all this is, is a scare tactic by Tara trying to flex their muscles, and you have nothing to fear.....just dont be intimidated and stand in front of that ol country boy judge in court and he will side with the common man all day long, especially when they dont have any right to write you the ticket in the first place....
stay tuned......

I know there are some law enforcement on this forum...What are you guys thinking. I don't hunt this area, but was planning on it until this came out. So if it is a scare tactic, then it is working somewhat. I respect posted signs and always hunt and fish with good ethics. Just don't want to be harassed for one, two don't want to trespass onto to someones private land, three just want to know the law. I have grown up fishing oxbows all up North Mississippi. Never ever had an issue with fishing in flooded fields that bordered the oxbows and river. Always considered it navigable water accessible from a public ramp.
Just curious for some of you lawyers out there. If someone was to be up in these flood waters, get hurt/injured, would there be any liability to these landowners?

Well Mr. Buddy Row I just hope you don't run into the right man at the wrong time! And Lake Lee doesn't even border with Louisana. Why don't you go try huntin middle bar (he he) if you know where that is smartass! Let em catch yo ass out there they will make a believer out of you! They've been there done that before and got juris prudence on their side. They also have no connection to Tara what so ever. So yall can just back off this Tara thing it's not just them. Tara is doing nothing wrong. They asked the state law enforcement for help and obvioiusly they are getting it. If you do have a "gamewarden" uncle that's gettin you off for game violations I would certianly like to know his name and badge number!
