Slugs while Duck Hunting

I was duck huntin last week with two friends and it was turning out to be a pretty slow morning. All of a sudden I hear a splash that sounds like a 55 gallon drum dropped from the sky into the slough/field we were set up on. I look out probably 80yards in the field and see a deer stampeding across into some CRP. I look back in the direction it came from and here comes more grunting like crazy with noses to the ground. It was a sight for sure, they never knew we were there.


I got to thinking what a perfect time to have a slug in my pocket.
I was talking with my Dad the other day about how you can't have lead in your possession while duck hunting and we agreed why not allow slugs. We wouldn't figure that a slug would harm waterfowl like they say lead pellets do.

What do yal think?
I'm not trying to start a "lead don't really hurt the ducks" argument.
Just wondering if any would agree slugs should be allowed. If not, what could be the reasons.

It would take an booty of a warden to cite you for having a slug........if a fed checked you you can bet you would get a citation

I think the real issue you would run into is if you shot it, you would have to have orange on....

If you were huting in a blind you would not........that would be like huting from a shoot house and they changed that law last year.........you would need it coming out and going in though.....

When i first started thinking about it, I figured it would take a knucklehead to write you up for that, but then chopper brought up the orange issue and I had to re-think.

most of the time, it its firearm season during duck season, which it usually is in MS, i carry a few buckshot in my jean pockets. guess its wrong, but id take my chances.

I thought you had to have orange on in the woods anytime you were hunting during rifle season.. How does that work on camps that have both Duck and Deer hunting.. ????

I think I would take my chances on a slug in the blind with me.. Any GW that thinks I am taking a shot at a duck with a slug has got to have some kind of chip on his shoulder..

single projectile = illegal. Doesn't matter if it's lead or not. What would be best is some of the "dead coyote" load by hevi-shot. It's slightly smaller than buck shot size, so you could have it while duck hunting. It wouldn't kill a deer past 40 yards reliably, but it would be your best bet on the ethical/legal front. Assuming you are on private land where there are no restrictions on firearms for deer.

The Duck Commander does it on one of his videos. They are duck hunting and a doe goes to walk across their pond and Phil grabs his rifle misses the deer the 1st shot and then hits it on the run with the 2nd shot. I don't what state it was filmed in, but he got away with it.

I take a slug when I think about it. Never know when you might see a monster. I am not worried about getting checked.

Honestly, i think if you are duck hunting, you are DUCK hunting.
And if you are deer hunting you are DEER hunting.

I've seen several huge bucks well within slug range during duck hunts. But i prefer to just enjoy the opportunity to see something in the wild rather than just kill it b/c its in season and i happen to be out in the woods with a firearm. Just my opinion. i wouldn't think less of anybody who did it, but just not my cup of tea.

One year me and a buddy of mine had a big 10pt walk across the lake we were hunting. I actually shot a mallard when he was in the middle of the lake. He of course jumped a little at the shot, but just trotted out into the other side of the pond. We laughed about it afterwards. It was a great hunt. It did not cross my mind to want to shoot the deer. I guess i've killed enough in my day.
