Dog Trainers
Dog Trainers
I have a lab that is about six months old and I was wondering if anyone knew any good dog trainers in central MS. How much does getting a lab trained usually cost?

You are looking at a cost of $300 to $400 a month, which could equate to as much as $4,800 per year. As for trainers, Glenn McElroy in Vaiden, Ms is a good trainer and turns out a lot of Master Hunters. Glenn is a very personable guy and has done some training for me. He is a regular on this board, he goes by Glenn. His phone # 662-464-0489. I am sure that there are others in your area. The name Charlie Moody comes to mind as well. I don't know Charlie, but have heard good things about him as well. Depending on what your goal is for your dog, you are looking at a minimum of 6 months for a started or Junior Hunter dog (no hand signals) or a maximum of 3 years for a Master Hunter, that is if the dog has the drive and willingness to learn. I would start by giving Glenn McElroy a call.

Steve Vires has done some training for me as well. He is a good trainer and runs his dogs in the UKC Hunt Tests, but he is located east of Como in north Ms. If you are looking for a trainer in Central Ms., Glenn McElroy is the only one that comes to mind. There is also a trainer named Jesse Shepard in Northeast Ms that I have seen at some hunt tests. I don't know much about Jesse, but he has had some Master Hunter dogs qualified.
steve and jesse
both steve and jesse will be in memphis, tn this weekend and next week competing in the HRC's International Grand Hunting Retriever test. Both are excellent trainers with plenty of experience. Both prefer black dawgs, so you know they got a decent head on their shoulders....hehehe

Steve Vires at Online Labs... Check out his website at http://www.onlinelabradors.com/ or 662-526-5698. Steve is a full time gun dog and hrc hunt test trainer. His facilities at Como are first rate. From a large area to do yard work and basics, to a pasture groomed for dog training, to his own designed techincal water pond, he knows what is needed to train hunting dogs, and has the abilites and equipment to do it. Decoys, birds, guns, boats, 4 wheelers, treestands, or even upland are all part of the regime. Proud to talk him up, as steve is one my best friends, and my training mentor. I learned to train from steve, to think like a dog, and to understand what dogs do and why. I learn something every week from him, matter of fact. He's my biggest assett in the dog game, and also my biggest critic...which keeps me honest, and working hard. We'll be in memphis next week at the International Grand Hunt, but he'd be glad to answer any questions you have about him or his faclities after that, I'm sure. Check out the website, and there is an online discussion form you can link from there as well. Feel free to ask steve, me, or the form any questions you have. travis

Charlie Moody has trained several dogs for folks here on the board. He's got mine up there in Louisville right now. She's 13 months old and after 4 months training has 2 AKC Sr passes (needs two more to get titled). A good honest trainer will not waste his time or your money on a dog that just won't do it, and will let you know when he's done what he can do. Budget 6 months of kennel fees (about $2400) to get Sr titled. A Sr titled dog makes a great duck dog - steady, solid marks, handling, diversions.
Going to have to give my vote to Charlie Moody. He trained my dog which has a senior title. Like DR2 said if he doesnt think your dog has it he will let you know. I Won't hesitate to return my dog to him for his master trainig.
Now then, get your weapons—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me. Genesis 27:3
I have just run in two separate AKC master stakes with Charlie Moody and his dogs have done very well. How a trainer's dogs do in hunting tests is always a good measuring stick for a trainer. I was very impressed with the work of Charley's dogs. He also has a good, calm demeanor with his dogs, which I personally like.
If you don't want to drive to como to see Steve Vires, my next stop would be charlie Moody. I can't say I have seen him train, but running hunt tests, very rarley can I recall him running a dog that looked like crap. His dogs always look good in hunt tests. However Steve Vires would be my first choice, hands down a good trainer, and what's a few hours drive if you get what you want out of your dog?
Jesse Sheppard has my dog "Dutch" and he has taken what I trained into him and molded it, straightened it out, corrected some faults, trained in several new things and in just 1 month he passed 5 straight hunt tests and now has a "HR" title. He gets great results in a short amount of time. I have never heard anything bad about Steve and I know he has some top notch training facilities. I saw one of his dogs run at a test a couple of weeks ago and it did excellent!
