What do you need...
for a dog to legally be able to hunt i was told that it had to have paper and a few other things i was just curious a friend just got a lab from his wife for christmas but it doesnt have papers and i couldt remember

you will need to register the dog at Dog'sUnlimited, pay 450 a year to keep him legit, this includes all paper work. It's an extra 100 or so added for public land. Tell him that he has to keep accurate records, if you think the irs is bad, wait to the boys from Dog's Unlimited get on ya. Also, don't quote me on this, there's different rate fer different colors. Being black's are the cats meow, they charge a premium to allow you to hunt with one.

That also depends on what you are going to hunt. Small game such as rabbits and squirrels require one type of dog permit, upland game requires a special migratory permit for your pup, and waterfowl requires an additional federal dog permit. Of course, you can get the 'All-in-One' license, that way you can use him to hunt everything. However, the waterfoul dog permit is still required regardless of whether you get the 'All-in-One' or not.
If you have any additional questions, I am sure that the Department of the Interior can answer them for you. (They are the ones who regulate these permits.)
