AMERICUS, Kan. -- An Emporia State University freshman died during the weekend after being shot by someone in a passing vehicle while he was hunting for geese.

Beau Arndt, 18, of Americus, and two friends had placed several dozen goose decoys in a farm field Saturday and were lying in the snow waiting for incoming birds, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Department.

Arndt's companions told police that a pickup truck stopped along a nearby road and fired a rifle shot into the decoys, but hit Arndt instead and then left the scene.

Shooting waterfowl with a rifle is illegal in Kansas, as is shooting from inside a vehicle or onto someone's property without permission.

Arndt was the first person killed in a hunting accident in Kansas since 2005, state officials said.

The Emporia Gazette reported on Tuesday that witnesses described a truck they'd seen as a late 1970s model Ford pickup with a standard cab and a Shawnee County license plate.

A witness told authorities there were three men inside.

The newspaper reported that the cab and front end of the truck were red and the bed was orange.

The rear of the bed had an old Ford logo on it, which the newspaper reported as being three blocks - one large, one medium and one small.

Authorities urged anyone with any information to call the sheriff's office at 342-5545, the Lyon County Crimestoppers organization at 342-2273 or 1-800-KS CRIME.

Shouldn't be too hard to find that truck. I doubt there are many that fit that description.

So sad.

Just a shame that someone would shoot into a flock of geese not knowing or caring to see if there were people in there.

I hope the bastards hit a bridge abutment on the way home tonight.

Heard a rumor that the guy that was killed also worked part time for Avery. Anyone know it there is any truth to that? Doesn't really matter, I really hate it for his family, and I hope the killers are caught and done away with.

The guy from Avery was killed a couple of months ago. He was a pro staffer w/ them. He was killed in the same manner. Doubt this is the same guy unless it's just now hitting the board here.

The guys that shot into the decoys probably had no idea they killed someone. It is an unfortunate consequence of shooting geese (or what you thought was a goose) from the road, with rifles. It is no different than one hunter shooting another after mistaking him for a deer.

I don't wish any ill-will toward the shooters, because I seriously doubt any of them intentionally set out to kill anyone. But, it's like drunk drivers. Even though they didn't intend to kill, it still happened and there is a price to pay afterwards.

What we've got to do as a hunting community is to band together to stop this goose sniping. It ain't cool to have a string of collars you took from the road with a rifle. Sheesh, my grandmaw could kill a goose with a rifle propped up on her rearview mirror. Where is the skill or honor in that? We've got to let the hunting community know this and turn in those who continue to carry on with this dangerous practice.

Why does Fish and Wildlife use collars? Why don't they use leg bands like for ducks? Just seems if would cut down on this.
