fiberglass vs aluminum boat

Postby yukonpete2 » Mon Dec 17, 2007 1:02 pm

I'm looking at a fiberglass boat for duck hunting, what are some opinions of aluminum vs fiberglass for duck hunting?

Thanks

If you're only hunting big lakes with deeper water you can get away w/ fiberglass I would think. Don't think I would recommend one for scooting through skinny water, swamps, sloughs, flooded timber, etc. I know I've ran up on many a stump this year that would have sunk a fiberglass boat.

Depending on what size boat your getting another option would be to rotomold plastic.. If your going for a smaller boat like 12' there are several options out there. The Otter duck boat.. And I also saw a 12' plastic one shaped like a Jon boat..

Personally I run a alum. all welded boat, because the stumps got to my old boat and all the riv. started leaking, which I didn't mind a little water in the boat, but when the deks start floating its time to do something. Really depends on what type of area you are hunting and preference

Aluminum all the way. fiberglass gets brittle when it gets cold.

I've hunted with a buddy with a 14' Lesarge skiff. For a fiberglass boat, it's tough to beat.

I've had both, a fiberglass 14" Crosby that I sunk once and almost sunk twice. The second time it happened on a big lake in the cold, duck hunting. From that day forward, I decided my life was to valuable to duck hunt out of a questionable boat. I bought an Xpress all welded 1650 with built in flotation. I would not go back. The xpress is tough as nails and wont sink. I personally prefer aluminum for duck hunting. I have a Pioneer fiberglass deep V for Saltwater fishing and the fiberglass is great for taking salt. It will not sink either. The weight of the fiberglass is good in rough oceans but for the woods, a welded jon is hard to beat.
