4 month old pup with blown knee?

I have been in your situation before! When one of my dogs was younger he would limp some and the vet said that is was due to the growth plates and the limping did go away however he is older now and has torn both acls and I had Tobias fix them he use to be a professor at Mississippi State and now has a vet clinic in Memphis (Emergencey Vet located on Germantown Road). I did a lot of research on this when my dog was injured and with both of my brothers being competitve field trialers I was able to talk to lots of pros who have had this same injury and all of them said to use Tobias or some vet in Birmingham.

My dog has done very well since the surgery and has hunted many years since. I will tell you that I was told in the begining that if the tear one the other is likely to go later. Also if I remeber correctly the surgerys were each around $2500 (expensive)!!!!

Thanks for the info. I have heard of Tobias in Memphis and Dr. Milton in B'ham. I am still trying to get a conclusive diagnosis at this point. What is Dr. Tobias' first name? Were you satisified with him? Was the surgury TPLO?

I do not remeber Tobias first name his clinic is emergency vet on germantown road. I will get his number for you if you want it call me at 662 816-9129. Yes I was very happy with the procedure at Tobias my dog has been doing fine for years now. I have really got back into training lately as I am having to do it to support my family so I work him every day and he shows no signs that anything was ever wrong.

Also Tobias had to give my dog a shot to relax him to really test is joints properly. All the other vets one of which is my good training buddy all gave me inconclusive reports on what the problem was. So my point is you might (Again this is just a suggestion) want to see if you vet will relax him so the slack in the knee can be measured, Tobias had a guage to measure this i dont know if all vets do or not.

Oh by the way that is not true that he is to young to tear it my dog was very young when it happened the first time.

I'm no expert on this but want to know for my own curiosity. Isn't it the CCL that dogs tear and not the ACL?

I think you are correct. I do not think that dogs have an ACL, but most people say ACL because they are familiar with that injury in humans.

Dude has an appointment in the morning at MSU vet school. A friend who does research there connected us with an ortho specialist. Hoping for a good report....

Well, it was def a ruptured cruciate ligament. Dude had surgury yesterday and I picked him up this morning. He is doing good.

i had 2 surgurys done on pace after she was injured on the farm by a tractor, my local vet damaged one of her growth plate in her ulna, i had to have an ulnar osectomy, TWICE. it cost alot, but was worth it, she is in her 5th season, and pics up over 500 birds a year easily, and that with only one bone in one front leg! they are amazing animals.

From my experience, take the dog to MSU, they are good, they told me alot of stuff my local vet just disregarded!
