I haven't drove down there yet this season, but I would imagine all the adjoining land owners have the ramps locked up tight right now. Funny they sure don't mind you launching there form Feb-Oct to fish, but come duck season and everything is locked downed tighter than Fort Knox. Wish I had a PUBLIC oxbow that I could claim to be a private lake all to myself!

I hear they just closed the ramp on Flower Lake. Same situation: public lake with no public access. Wasp Lake is in the same shape. We lost our public boat ramp and now the only people with access are private landowners.

Just tell every one to go to lake bobby reed. There are 2 ramps on this PUBLIC water partially funded by MDWFP

Forgive me for being so ignorant, but I just can't see how this is right

What makes it public?, you should be thankful they let people fish the lake at all. They don't have to.

I was under the impression that if you own all the lannd around a lake, that made it private..

All the land around it is private, but that does'nt make the lake private. If there was a way in without tresspassing on private land then the local land owners couldn't say a thing about it.

May be private in your defination, but according to the law the water itself ain't! Just the land around it.

See this topic from last year: http://www.ducksouth.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=31114

Lots of reading but in short it says that an oxbow lake of the Mississippi is a public waterway, however if someone has to tresspass to gain access to the waterway then he would be breaking the law. Lake Jackson falls into this catagory. I believe Wingman, after checking into it even states that somewhere in one of the pages.

I think I see the problem. Lake Jackson is not an oxbow, it's landlocked. Washington is not an oxbow but is a "state" lake with public access.

It was an oxbow at one time just like Lee, Ferguson, whittington, etc..

Correct, Lee and Washington are both oxbows with private land all around but they do have public access. Actually Lake Jackson is still considered an oxbow. I guess the landowners in that area hope and pray the MDWFP never decides to build a public ramp there.

Anyway glad you had a good hunt there. Never fished there but it looks good.

i gotcha, i was under the impression that an oxbow was still connected to the river, ie, inside the levee. Good hunting...

Not arguing with anyone Warren, just stating it must be nice to have a public waterway with no public acess as your own personal duck hole. I guess if I was one of the few lucky landowners around Lake Jackson I'd be singing a different tune.
