it depends on how far you shoot. If you do not shoot very far go with the vxIII or if you do shoot at longer distance go with the 4x12

clarity will be a little different and light gathering will be a little better, depending on your price range look at some zeiss a lot better than leupold

Scopes

Postby Phat duck » Mon Dec 10, 2007 7:02 pm

I have both models....the varix II doesn't come in a 3.5-10 only varix III. The vari X III also has a build in range finder(90% of people don't know that). Its the #'s on the backside of zoom dial. Vari X II doesn't! Anyway, as far as clarity I can't tell much difference in the two. Another good scope is a Meoptic for the money. I bought one(4x12v56) and put it on my 270 WSM. I love it! Good luck!

yea like phat duck said some models do have the rangefinder on it. I have a vari xIII supposed to have 98% light transmission. I love mine, I have a 6x20-50 with the target turrets sitting on top of a 300 weatherby at 300 yards I can put 3 bullets in a 2" circle. You wont go wrong with either one, but I would go with the variXIII

First off Luepold no longer makes the Vari x series of scopes. So if you find one it will be at least a 2002 model. That's the last year they made them. Todays VX-ll is the same quality lens and spacing as the Vari x-lll was in 2002 and prior. The new VX-lll is a cut above anything the had back then with the exception of the target quality scopes. In my opionion and I sell the leupold too they are very overpriced for their quality. Meoptic is a very good scope for the money and you can buy a Zeiss for what you will pay for a good Leupold today. Probably the most overlooked value in a riflescope is the new Swift. What a lot of people don't know is their history. I believe they are the 2nd oldest scope manufacturer on the market today. They went thru a period that their quality went way down just like everyone else but now the new owners has brought back out their "premier" series with 30mm tubes on them and I will stack them up against most anything out there for about half the price. I personally own several of the older 30mm swifts and I can see thru them when the Leupolds give up! They also have a new 3.5x14x56 that I will put up with the best of em! To answer your question though you can't go wrong with the leupold cept maybe the price just be sure you know what you are gettin. Leupold made a big change in '02 just to get out of a lot of warranty problems they had. Plus so they would have something to dump off in walmart! Good Leupolds cannot be sold in walmart only at dealers!. Good luck and if I can help let me know.
