Black Squirrel Question

Postby richard b evers » Mon Dec 10, 2007 9:27 am

I killed a Black Squirrel at my duck hole this week end - question is are they common? - I have never seen one and I was thinking about getting it mounted - a man from my camp said that were common and that it was just a fox squirrl that was black. - is there a black squirrl?

I've never seen one in the wild, must less killed one. It would be on my wall for sure.

I have killed a few of em, but i wouldn't say they are common.
Just find them in certain areas.

Been waiting to find an old one with a white nose to mount.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

Yes they are common in the delta.

about 4 years ago, i killed 7 blacks and a gray in one mornings hunt in DNF. They are dumber than regular reds or grays. 5 of those seven came out of 1 huge pecan and none really even ran after i started shooting...They just ran closer, while barking at me. :D

If ya'll don't mount them, then certainly don't waste them....give them to someone who ties fishing jigs.....they love the course black hair from them.

They are just as common as greys or reds in the north east part of the country.

The way I have always understood it is that the black squirrel in the delta in one that is only indigenous to that area. So if you killed a black squirrel there it is somewhat of an accomplishment.

There area also fox squirrels that have extra melanin and are black. These are kinda rare also, so either way you have something.

I love hunting the black squirrels in the delta, we used to come every year and make at trip for squirrels with our .25 cal flintlocks. In those tall delta trees, that is quite a challenge!

Not rare at all along the river in MS. Watched 5 out of the same stand last week in Issaquena county. Got a camp south of Vicksburg on the river thats loaded with them also.

Also it is nothing more than a melanistic phase fox squirrel.
