I emailed the pics to Dr. Kaminski at MSU. His judgement, based on the pics, was mallard x black duck hybrid. He also sent the pics to some of his colleagues to see what they thought as well.

Mallard. If you check delta waterfowls website, there is a quiz that you can take that has pictures of ducks who aren't in full plumage and there is one of a drake mallard that looks just like that.http://www.deltawaterfowl.org/multimedi ... s=00000000

That bird in the DW quiz doesn't even show the bird's body, all you've got to look at is the head, which is not close to the bird I got. The green coloration is coming in all over the bird's head on the quiz, but is filled in in a distinct stripe on my bird. I also got further info on the bird via Dr. Kaminski from one of his colleagues: he agrees that the duck is a mallard x black duck hybrid, most likely the product of a F1 hybrid backcrossed to a full mallard, which gives it more physical mallard characteristics than a F1 cross would possess.

I can say without an ounce of doubt, its a duck. and if its a duck, it needed killing. so good job all around. No shame in having to resort to killing halfbreds, young or sick ones.... they need to die as well.

I killed a duck two years ago thatt according to the books was a Mexican duck. Had white only on one edge of the speculum and no white any where else on the duck. had an olive bill and orange legs. i saved it for a while hoping to learn more, but eventually wrote it off as unique coloring or a mallard hybrid.
