I'll give'em credit.......they aren't stupid.......but they DO do some things that lead one to believe they aren't as 'smart' as folks think they are. I think they are just equipped with some unique survival skills......good eyesight, good hearing, and nerves of a mouse that's wandered into a gopher hole fulla rattlers. They are some nervous suckers, aren't they?
They oughta be.....everything in the woods is after'em, right now.
Yesterday afternoon, it took 4 jakes better than 45 minutes to 'come-in' once I started calling......'didn't get in any hurry like jakes usually do. I was sittin' there, filming them at 20 yds, when 3 coyotes ambled through there and put'em ALL in the trees. I had a gobbler answering me back in the woods about 150yds while all this was goin'-on........'course everything just kinda shut-down when I shot one coyote........but the jakes never flushed from the trees above me until I walked over to the coyote.
I better let'em settle down for a couple o' days. They're starting to call on up in the day and are getting away from the hens a little........only a matter o' time, now.

You just go on an laugh, DD! I can take it. These turkeys are a lot like ducks in that sometimes they appear as if they can reason and have you figured out; then they do something like land while you're picking up the decoys and make you think they don't even have a brain! Turkeys do have the best eyes and will nail you to the wall. If they had much of a sense of smell, I never would kill one as much permanone as I'm wearing these days. The ticks are already bad over this way. You boys are right about those snakes, too. The copperheads are laying in every sunny spot in the woods. They hide good, too!
Didn't go yesterday cause it was raining.
Got busted big time this morning.
Got in the woods before daylight and was standing in the middle of a logging road to listen. There was a lot of background noise ( cars, birds, dogs, etc. ). I kept thinking I heard one drumming. After a while I knew I heard one drumming. Got to looking and the SOB was roosted 40 yds away. I had walked right past him in the dark. I slipped to the nearest tree 10 yds away and sat down. He did gobble once at a woodpecker. Instead of flying down he flew off toward a pasture.
There's always tomorrow.

Getting better
Well,
Went back this morning to try them again. It was overcast and very windy, but we gave it a shot. The first bird didn't gobble until 5:45. We went to him, sat down and went to war. He went back and forth for about 45 minutes. Then we started wearing the calling out. Within 5 minutes of heavy calling he came with 65 yards and brought two of his smaller friends. They were all gobbling so loud it felt like the ground was shaking. He strutted and gobbled for about 5 minutes in front of me and then got tired of waiting and went away. He was probably the biggest turkey I have seen the last 3 years, and I have killed several big birds the last two years. His beard looked 3 inches wide and 10-11 inches long. He must weigh 20 plus pounds. He just became my occupation from now until season ends!!!!

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST. GOT ONE YESTERDAY. HE WEIGHED 17 1/2 LBS. HAD A 10 7/8 BEARD, I THINK IT COULD GO 11. AND HAD 1 3/8 SPURS. BIGGEST ONE YET THIS YEAR BUT WASNT AS BIG AS THE ONE WE MESSED WITH ON THE WAY BACK TO THE TRUCK. I WAS LAYING ON TOP OF MY TURKEY WHILE THE BIG MAN WAS STRUTTING 70 YDS OUT. HE WILL GET HIS NEXT.
