Postby deredwine » Tue Nov 20, 2007 1:49 pm

I am looking to book a deer hunt in either Iowa or Kansas next season; do any of you have an outfitter you would recomend?

x2.

Are you interested in a fully guided operation, just an outfitter that gives you land access, or something in between?

I am thinking of beginning to apply for an Iowa tag every year, so that by the time I finally get drawn, I will have all the other particulars sorted out.

Somebody explain the procedure (protocol) into going about "putting in for a tag" in these 2 states. They are the 2 that most interest me, but i am pretty ignorant to the whole process.

Go to the Iowa and Kansas DNR websites, they will guide you into how you need to do to apply ie. time to apply, where to apply and what season. For Iowa, if you want hunt quick you can probably get drawn first year for shotgun or muzzleloader, but bow may take a couple of years. For Kansas it could be the same wait depending on the zone you are applying for and how popular it is. I would check with Paul Fountain in Iowa, he has several different types of hunts. Google him. For Kansas, i would get on the internet and start looking around. One good point is to always get references and check them!!!!

I have heard that Kansas will be over the counter next year. I just got back from there this weekend and that is what the locals were saying.

kansas will not be over the counter for non residents, they are making some changes to there licencing, but not over the coutner. still gonna cost you almost $400.00 for a buck tag in KS

Does KS do a preference points system like Iowa?

This is how I understand it. Every time you apply to be drawn and are NOT drawn, you build a point. So the second year you apply, your name goes in the pot twice. You could possibly be drawn the first year (with only one point), just the luck of the draw. This is the way some elk tags are done in CO.

What I DON'T know is... Say you get drawn but want to wait til next year, so you pass on the tag. Do you still get that point, or not? I would like to begin applying to kinda "guarantee" being drawn in 2-3 years when I know where and when I want to go.

Also, is their an application fee, or do you lose money for just applying?

At $321 bucks for a buck tag in kansas, its not likely that many people would apply if they didnt refund if you did not get drawn, you pay, and if you dont get drawn you get a refund.

I have hunted with Ross trophy outfitters in Kansas, and would go back. Great hunting. Look at the web site rosstrophyguides.com I think
