big black river deer/turkey?

Postby cajuncannon » Mon Nov 12, 2007 12:36 pm

does anyone have any experience hunting deer and turkey in the big black river bottom near canton? i'm looking at buying a chunk of land down there. i was gonna drive down to go take a look at the property, but i didn't want to waste my time. if anybody has anything helpful, i'd appreciate it.

p.s. - and to the guy that is just itching to say something - yes, i'm am, in fact, aware that this is a waterfowl forum.

it has great hunting. that part of madison county produces some of the largest whitetails in the state.

I have hunted in this area my whole life. If you would like specific info on the area in question shoot me a PM. Generally speaking the areas of the big black that have been managed well produce some good bucks, turkeys are scattered throughout the area but spring flooding hurts the hatch and causes ups and downs with the population.

Born and raised 5 miles from the big black, not in canton, but about 25 miles south of canton. It has great deer and late season duck hunting. Turkey is good, but like wilkat7 said the flooding can be an issue. Does the land border the big black, if so do you need some one to manage it for you? I would be more than happy to help you out.

Well it will be a hit or miss. Like any piece of property, you have to take a look at it and see if YOU feel like it is a good buy. If it is in Madison County you will be paying a premium for it if its worth a flip. If you do and need a older coot to watch over it for you, give me a shout.

Been hunting it my whole life just west of Canton. Can't say I'd rather hunt anywhere else. Seen, killed, and witnessed the killing of many big deer over the years. As for turkeys, I wouldn't hunt anywhere else either. Shoot me a pm if you have any questions.
