I like using sparrows myself..ha ha. Gives the dog a little more to hunt for.
But seriously, if your looking for some pigeons, get you a trap and put it on top of a gin, or any high building. I use bread crumbles to get them in there. I have been catching them this way for 3 years. We have an old town sqaure which is the highest of all buildings in our small ass country town. Ask permission, and more than likely they will let you trap the birds since they are such a problem. Good luck!

May I ask, why pigeons? Why wouldnt you use domesticated ducks? Is it price, or maybe availiability. Just wondering!!! Busky

The reason for pigeons.....is cost, availability and if you have a pup, a duck is usually to big for the pup to retrieve easily. A pigeon is smaller and the pup can handle it better.

If you do find a place to get pigeons let us know.

What about using Quail. I know where you can get those birds.

I think you can buy all the pigeons, ducks, and chickens you can handle at the First Monday flea market in Ripley. I know that at one time you could get about any animal you needed there. Its been a long time since I have heard anybody talk about the flea market and I am really not sure if they still have it.

how exactly will you use the pigeons. do you let them fly, shoot them, and then command a retrieve? do you incapacitate (kill) them before hand. I hope this is not a really stupid question, but I would really like to know.

i used pidgeons for training purposes and could get all i wanted at First Monday.... it has been awhile but i could get 25 for around 2 to 3 bucks apiece..... i would take a bread wrap twist tie tie their wings behind their back and toss them by hand.... or place in a grass field for blind retrieves... they are durable birds if your dog ain't too hard mouthed.... 1st monday of each month at Ripley.....

PS. i would have to want some pidgeons real bad to fight the crowds...
