L'Anguille River Hunt Test
bigbeeducker's dog Layla is one of the finest chocolate females i've seen. I had to honor of training with her this past month and half. She reminds me alot of another great little brown dog named Chipper. The only differnces are Layla likes to yelp when released she reminds me of Rowdy in that aspect. But overall she is an amazing dog.

tbone wrote... awrite...I have given folk all day to describe Travis' stick pond water test.....so lets hear about it.....good or bad....cheese or what....how many footballs marks .....pass failure rate......judge/handler conferences afterwards????????
Was rice field, not a stick pond. And you KNOW it was good. And you KNOW it wasn't cheese. And you KNOW there where no footballs. And as always theres never any confrences when we're done. When dogs are adequetly tested, everyone knows if there dog did the work or not. I did field several inquries, but none of them where wondering why their dog didn't pass, it was clear cut. Sat the other flight passed more than we did, and neither flight had to judge anything, and sunday we passed more than they did, and again, no judging to be done. Dogs saw different judges sat and sunday btw, so we felt that accounted for the different passing %. Couldnt been too over the top, since a belgain maloius ran bye dog and did the marks clean in 3 outta 4 tests. When an amature woman brings a dog that isn't even a retreving breed and comes runs the marks, kinda ends the gallery experts on what kinda tests it is! hehe. Dat belgiun waffle dog is bad boys, you might not wanna make fun unless you got a big block in the truck.
When they post the pictures I'll try to put descriptions to it, and give a little in sight to what we where thinking with the birds, and maybe it'll help folks digest it a little.travis

This was Saturdays finished water test. Missed the land test Sat am. My boy smoked the land test, and his line manners got him Sat pm on the water. Didn't see the go bird, too busy dancing around the bucket and not responding to his new name, 'Heel'. I think he thought he was really hunting Sat pm. We hunt rice fields/pits a bunch. Stan Brown and ? judged flight A Sat.
Travis, I think you helped set this test up, so you can help describe the scenario. I think I just took some pics of the set up before the first dog ran and some during runs.
If I remember right, handler walks to the line, throws a decoy out of the bag and loads 3. Middle (winger is on the right side throwing toward the middle) mark comes out first, swing right, bird comes out. Swings 180 left, go bird comes out. Run the marks, blind is past the 1st check between the 1st and 2cd mark. Run the blind, on the return the diversion is thrown. Deliver blind, run diversion. I think thats right?
Blind stake is below the left side of the treeline, left of the middle winger (center left) in the picture. 2cd mark comes out of the winger on the right side of the picture below.
Go bird winger, throws the mark behind the check to the left of the winger and directly below the white cabover tractor.
Close up of the blind stake, between the far left winger (out of picture on the left) and the middle winger (far right blind on the right in picture).

First off, to describe cris getting wet. They had just dumped a cooler of ice water on mike mcferrin. I wasn't going to let that happen to cris. So i grabbed a bottle of water, surpirsed her with it, she got wet, everyone had fun and she didnt have to be cold for the next 8 days. I thought it went well. I didnt want to take away from the accomplishment, but I knew there was nowhere for her to change, and she didnt need to be soaked for 45 minutes till she got to hotel room. Not sure anyone did, but mike could change in the parking lot, cris couldnt. The hat I had on was tommy williams. I swear its the same hat jon voight wore in deliverence.
the test. you entered the test and opened a decoy bag and tossed a single decoy out. it was thought out so it didnt effect the dogs, it was window dressing to make a few handlers pucker and complain. Several dogs had an unjudged control break on the decoy btw. several didnt care, they knew the real thing was coming. It was mainly done for my amusement, and I enjoyed it. I actually think it made the dogs behave better on the line. Big swing with wide open birds, and never reheeled a dog on the line. cant remember ever doing that. So I think it might have actually helped the ones that needed it, getting that SIT 4 foot before they went to bucket. All I asked handlers was, just think your showing up late to a hunt, and dont disrupt my hunt any more than you have too. Giving them the ok to stop their dogs, but not scream.
middle bird winger was on far side of the right levee, thrown angled back to land on left side of the levee. It was close to levee, to make scenting it from the other side difficult, but not tucked too tight as to make hunting it difficult. We knew that after dogs crossed a levee on the left for an unseen go bird, they'd cross the levee and work behind the winger and cross back over. Exactly how most did the test, that did the middle bird. second bird was right bird, thrown off the turn row you where on, into a knocked down levee kinda hole with a splash. Easy to get once you got there, a dog just bound and determined to run long had the chance. Go bird was left bird, and it was thrown from the side of the levee you where on, to the other side. Dogs crossed the levee, and basically where out of sight. The wind gave the dog the bird once they crossed the levee and the fall area was wide open. Every dog that crossed the levee came back with the bird, save for one with a short fall that landed tucked up to the levee, once the dog hunted the levee, got ready to leave but went back to the levee, we told the handler he had made the bird, to pick it up and lets roll. The blind caught about 25 yards of the levee, angling it. Several dogs required mutiple whistles to catch a peice of the levee. Generally when they went over the levee they scurried out the levee instead of resuming their blind. Several dogs angled the levee nicely and only needed a cast to the bird to pick up.
Wind changed some during the day. The right bird area for a few dogs, they where able to wind the blind from there. Most couldnt. A lot more dogs winded the blind when they where hunting between the 2 fall areas, not a good place to be. The middle mark was made difficult in the fact dogs had crossed a levee to get to go bird, now they didnt have too. It set up the blind nicely.
comments I thought where funny...' its a grand test'. No if it where a grand test, Id tucked the go bird tight to the levee instead of giving it away. Had I made that bird hard to pick up, lots of dogs would have went out on the go bird... Hearing its a grand test from people whose dogs ran back and forth in front of that levee cause they didnt know what it was, and looking for a place to but thru, was kinda funny. 'cant see your dog on that blind.' you can if your dog is running that blind. 100 yard blind with one hazard, you ought to be able to keep your dog in sight. If he wont carry a line over that levee, stop him before hand and cast him. Pretty basic stuff. 'Dogs don't have anything to mark off, they just kinda know where the birds are, and have to hunt em up from there'. Uh, yeah, we're in a rice field, they're hunting dogs. Pin point marking goes out the window when you throw birds into a sea of the same. We knew that, and judged that way. 'its a trick'... if Id wanted to trick dogs, belive me, I coulda. I could have made one path in the wrong place with my 4 wheeler over that right levee, and crashed pratically every dog in the that flight, my dogs included. Wasn't our intentions to do that, so it didnt happen. But belive me, if where where training there, Id made a path across that right levee that wudda sucked dogs like the burmeda triangle! travis

I need one of those panoramic cameras, but this is the best I could do. All these were taken before the first dog ran. I think this is Juice, Travis, and Dana G running the test dog.
Blind is too the left of the winger in this picture, maybe 10 yards off the road and 100 yds out?
Troy and Travis (hidden behind Troy) explaining the setup.
One of the guys on the first winger on the left just got stronger as the morning went on. Man that dude was sailing those ducks, every bit of 50-70 yrds!
Great test, no doubt! Looking forward to seeing you fellas this spring. Need to pack my sh#t and head to Huntsville. Gonna go watch my first SRS. I appreciate all the hard work you judges, volunteers, club members, and handlers did this past weekend. We'll get there on day. Scott S
Oh, and whoever cooked that chicken did an excellent job!
