Natchez Trace @ Old Canton Rd

Postby Deadeye » Fri Oct 19, 2007 8:24 am

I saw 4 of the finest long beards this morning on the entrance ramp to the Trace from Old Canton. I'm not talking 2 year old birds... these were monsters.

My office is moving this weekend to north Jackson and this is the first time I've taken this route to work. They were a beautiful site.. in the city limits mind you.

Deadeye... going from seeing brotha's in south JCK to longbeards on the north side....

I saw them this morning. I almost wrecked.
Why is my mouth so dry this morning, when I drank so much last night?

They are the birds that was rasied at the old house (restored) just north of the Trace on Old Canton. They come back to the barn at night and hang out up and down the trace/old canton during the day. Some times there is as many as 6 toms and 10 to 12 hens in the field behind the pond with the ducks, geese, and swans. There was a pair of peacocks at the old house at one time, but I have not seen them in a couple years. They had a lot of different types of birds/fowl the past several years.

you need to drive the Trace from the TN line to Nashville. There are turkeys everywhere. You will see a huge flock every 5 or 10 miles.

I would think that is the same birds from the old Ross Barnett place. Nice birds no doubt.

I saw two of the big ones fighting in Ross Barnetts yard the other day.
They are definitely some huge dudes. no doubt.
I'm surprised some redneck hasn't gotten busted already..
they would be so easy to kill w/ a bow.... I won't be giving my
secret strategy out though.

I almost got one of them a few weeks ago at 2:30 in the afternoon. I was looking at the pond and all of a sudden I see them in the field. One decided he wanted to fly across Old Canton. He barely cleared the windshield of my Duramax! That would have ticked me off more ways than one.

Who says you have to live in the country to enjoy wildlife... I get to see those turkeys a couple times a week -- there are at least 12 - 15 in the flock, awesome sight. Also had a big buck and five does in my neighbor's back yard last week in south Madison.

My wife just called and said "You should have seen what I saw when I was getting on the Trace this morning." I said "I bet it was some big booty turkeys  " She wanted to know how in the hell I knew that. I'll never tell. :)

Dang, looks like we need to have a Madison Meeting to discuss the wildlife issues of our city!
I'll buy the first round!
