I thought Southern was picked to win their conference this year, did I hear it wrong? It's going to be hard to win the conference the way they are going...

Yep, they suck. Those bastardos got beat by a winless team who had scored no more than 24 points in any one game, had a first year coach, and was playing with their 3rd string qb who ran all over the field on USM. Lost the last of my gambling money for the football on them. Two weeks in a row they lost it for me. Still wouldn't mind having their coach though.

But they are still the best, most consistent D-1 program in the state.
All I can think of is their dominance over Alabama... They did pull one out back in 2000 (Bama's record was 3-8 ) but couldn't get them back in 03 during another down year (bama was 4-9). What's that overall record... something like, Bama 37-5-2?
You really sparked my curiosity so I just had to look up this stat. Southern Miss versus SEC schools overall is 34-95-3... Equals a lot of losing seasons if they were in the SEC and had to play more than 1 or 2 teams a season. I'm stepping off my soapbox now. Go STATE!

Yes, Southern laid an egg on national television. Of course, State and Ole Miss would never do such a thing as that
That being said, the numbers don't lie. Southern may not play in the big bad SEC, but they do have the best DI record in the state.
USM (1912-2004) Winning percentage .597, Conference Championships 7
UM (1893-2004) Winning percentage .572, Conference Championships 6
MSU (1922-2004) Winning percentage .485, Conference Championships 1
This is old data I found that doesn't include 2004-present, but I don't really think the last 3 years would help the cause too much for State or Ole Miss. Regardless of conference affiliation, if you want to make an argument for best DI program in the state based solely on wins and loses then Southern is the best is the state.
