Bustin Ducks!!!

Postby Phat duck » Sun Jan 19, 2003 9:06 pm

Well, we finally got in on a great hunt this afternoon. We hunted just west of Shelby. Had a rice field with some backed up water on it and been watching ducks pour in their right before 5:00 P.M for a/b a week. We put some mummy boats out on one of the pads and dressed them up w/ fast grass. We finally got set up @ about 3:45 and started killing ducks a/b 4:00. We killed 4 limits before 5:00. It was absolutely beautiful. :D

Has anyone else been having better luck on afternoon hunts?

Best of luck!!!

It's something unique to have a great afternoon shoot. It typically involves 1 of 2 things. The first is shooting a roost area and the 2nd is shooting new ducks just after a front comes in like we just had. It kinda sounds like you had the best of both worlds there. An non frozen food source attracting new ducks! Glad you had a good shoot. I have only been on 1 afternoon hunt where we shot more than 1 duck. It was on a day where the ducks had just gotten pushed in and 3 of us killed 7 mallards. I have been into a place the morning following a GREAT influx of ducks. We were going in before daylight and there were thousands of ducks on our hole from the night before....only saw that 1 time though.

I have consistently shooting ducks int he afternoon for the past month. Mostly near a roost area. Had some real good mornign hunts, but also some very bad morning hunts.

We have been killing them consistently in the afternoon. Enough to make the weekend worthwhile.

my best duck shoots have been the eve before the front rolls in.... don't wait for the front to get there, for they will all be gone ahead.... i have roosted a many of ducks riding the front to find them gone the next morn... on a slow year, take-em......

Judge-

You're exactly on track. I've been watching these ducks roost every afternoon for about a week. Thought I would throw them for a loop and boy did it work. Good luck on the last Weekend

lowduck - from the looks of the tail end of that last post I bet you have a lot of empty whiskey bottles laying around too! Nothing wrong with a little afternoon outing this late in the season....I'll be doing the same!
