I got my first two saturday morning and we've had them in the area for about a month now, a big flight of about 300 of them, been seeing them just about everyday. I've been asking other hunters about them and they are telling me that these birds should've been in mexico two months ago or something. All I know is I got 3 to finally work the spread and got two of them. I started about doing a double mount on a cypress log, but then calculated that to be around $400, which I don't have right now, sure did taste good in that frying pan though........
hmmmm -- question is are they coming this way or going back north? Strange thing is that I saw a large concentration of pintails about 1 week ago. I seem to remember those birds heading north about this time last year. Aren't BW's and Pintails the first to head back? Just curious.
Very interesting observation. That sort of sums up our season. BW Teal do not nornally winter in the MS Delta. They should be long gone by now. Seeing BW Teal during this time of year definately supports the notion of warmer winters and lack of migration. Hopefully, we won't see anymore BW Teal after this weekend when this big coldfront blows them to Central America. Just big greenheads.
been seeing several green wings but no BW teal in my neighborhood.... can't imagine them headed north so early.. but would be a great time to harvest a mature drake..... good luck......
I do remember about 5 years ago we shot a fair number of bluewings until about the third weekend in December.
Glad to hear about the large numbers of greenwings...they usually show up right before the mallards on a strong front on my place. They also are notorious for keeping my honey hole from freezing up!
