private blinds on ms public land??????

Postby skygazer » Mon Jan 06, 2003 8:52 pm

opening weekend my bro (captnT) and i met a few guys at a public ramp that post in this forum (tazdog) and another guy (sorry my memory is bad). anyway we talked of a blind that someone had put out somewhere on this public hole and they told us that there were nearly 1000 decoys in front of it. i thought they were probably exaggerating but i talked to a guy today that hunts out of it (an acqauntance of his owns it) and he told me there were 600+ dekes in front of it and a robo duck inside it (they keep it locked). anyhoo, they let all kinds of people hunt it and have a lock on it and several keys have been given out (dont know if its true just going off of what i was told). heres the thing, they have told everybody and there brother about it and there are a couple of guys who live in Tn who are planning on putting "several more out there next year." is it true that you can put a blind on a public lake and claim the spot as your own. he said "it only cost $35 and hell, we are slayin ducks, why the hell should i pay $1500 to lease if all i have to buy is an out of state and pay $35."
they are talkin about buying several rundown pontoon boats and turning them into blinds. i think that sucks. again, can they do that ?? and if so is there anything that can be done to stop it? :x :( :x

If it is truly public land, they can build it but if someone else gets there first they can hunt it. Some places do not allow people to build blinds at all, but people do anyway. The term public means everyone.

I don't know the law, but I sure wouldn't think so, that kind of crap irritates me, I have no problem with someone beating me to a spot, I mean if they get it they get it, I respect that and move on and give them credit for being hardcore enough to get there early, I have on occasion in my younger day camped out in my boat to get a spot,

I have run into the same thing, not quite as bad but people leave their decoys out 24/7 in some of the best spots, I'm pretty sure the law states you can not leave your decoys out like that.. I have shown up and nobody is around and so I hunted them, then the people showed up and expect you to leave.. I told them when I got done they could have it back, well they were kind of P-O'd but anyway I haven't done it again, I hate the fact that public hunting gets to be where if your a big enough jerk you can get the spot you want.. being a jerk is not my idea of a good time.. of course I do love it when they are set up in there "hole" and the ducks want to be somewhere else.. ah well just my opinion..

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The spot that particular one is on has been dry ground (or less than 1') 8 out of the last 10 years. The weekend we went in when the water level was 218' they were probably high and dry.

This year and last has been the exception, not the rule when it comes to water depth in there. When the level drops down you have to know the channel, and most of the yahoos running in there will have a big surprise for them when they try and get in there. That bottom is even softer tthan usual, being submerged for over a year now.

As I understand it, the permit allows you to set the blind, but it must be removed after the season. Also, it is my understanding its first come first served, that is you can hunt those blinds if you are the first there.

As I understand it there are areas in the Coldwater River Bottoms that you can purchase a permit for and place a blind on for the entire duck season. I believe that they can be put in around the first of Nov. and have to be removed after the end of the season. Not too bad for a $35 permit. My only concern about a blind built on a pontoon boat is the thiefs ability to steal it.... :o

Sounds like those decoys are abandoned property and are free for the taking. Either that or a little fluorescent orange spray paint might keep the guys from leaving the decoys on public property.

There are several areas around the Coldwater bottoms that the ACOE allows people to set up tempotary blinds, They do have to be out after the season is over and they do have to be permitted. The way the permit is set up only the person(s) who aquired the permit may hunt the blind and no one may set up another blind within 500ft. The permits are available to any body not just residents of Mississippi. The down side to the Big Floaters is that the areas where these are allowed are saturated with them, and this is just as bad has having to race to the boat ramp. If you have seen a blind, then the permit must be visible and the blind must be in the authorized areas, If you feel that some one has put a blind other than in these authorized areas then get with the ACOE, the information as far as who has the permit is public kowledge.

Hell we found out a couple of years ago that a 12 ga 2 3/4" T shot will work wonders on those floating blinds **note that we found several of our decoys that were stolen floating in front of the blind** this blind is UPSTREAM of where we hunt so the 2 dozen we found didn't just happen to float up there!

First of it is public!!! any Tom Dick or Harry can hunt it altho most are locked up tight so acess is tough. The 500 ft rule applys to another blind permit to say you can't have another permit within that area(500')but that don't mean I can't set up in my boat closer than that......Its pure bullsh!t , its public land people need to remember that fact!! you can't post public land it wouldn't be public..........So before all the yahoo's run off and buy up 15 permits ya need ta know they ain't POSTED signs and don't mean crap to me and alot of other people who know that they are simply a permit for people to leave there floating blinds on PUBLIC GROUND and the rangers to know where to look after the time there suposed to be outta there. The idea that you can post public land is pure BS and it ticks me off to no end I will add that I wont set up on top off sombody who has gonna to the effort of putting out a blind like that so long as you know..... I COULD IF I WANTED TOO!!!!!!GRRRRRRR I know sombodys out there thinking I would whoop Stano's booty if he set up on or in my blind heh......Well if ya want some get some ::::snicker::::
