PML: Gator called me out so I responded...Point is most hunters are all talk and no action and thus get what they deserve...Or even worse, are so devoted to their so called "conservative philosophy" that they cant see the forest for the trees....IE Wildlife needs habitat and traditional "economic development" favored by conservatives is destroying wildlife habitat at an alarming rate (not to mention GLOBAL WARMING and other types of pollution)....On the other hand, I am a lot of action and some talk...There are more effective enviroconservationists than myself in MS but not many...It aint bragging if (A) its true and (B) you can back it up...Incidentally, I forget to mention that one of my companies has planted tens of thousands of acres of hardwood seedlings for the CRP and WRP programs so not only have I been involved at a policy/activist level, I've also gotten my head, hands and feet cold, muddy and wet restoring the Delta....

I figured you would dodge George W. Bush's comments regarding GLOBAL WARMING yesterday...You have nowhere else to hide...Question is: Will you step up and admit your "stinking thinking" on this issue?

While digging through some old post I noticed a pattern....topics with 'your favorite wma' in the title seem to have about a 1:20 post to view ratio. That means for every 5 of you who post about a 'secrete' hole; there are about 100 folks reading it.

There was a thread back a few months ago about hunting on the mighty MS that thing had only 47 posts and almost 2500 views. ~ 1:50

I've never hunted the WMA that is the topic of this discussion, and likely never will. Nor did I start this thread. But, I am interested in this issue of draw hunts as it may affect other UNNAMED WMAs in the future (I will never again mention a specific WMA by name again on this board ---- to keep Anatidae happy ).

After reading the posts, I thought that I would provide some solid information to the rant ---- just to make sure the rant was about something that really was going to happen.

I now regret that I contributed to this thread at all.

I too heard the 4 wheeler wreck was the determining factor to go draw. With all the good things the MDWFP and DU have done for "Our favorite "WMA in the last few years kudoos are in order for the MDWFP and Hammer, thanks so much hammer time. However, why is there a 5:00 am rule. Who came up with 5:00 am rule. At 5:00 am you should be on your second cup of coffee moving you decoys and mojo's for the third time. You load your gun at 5:00 am. Leave the road and/or parking area at 5:00 am cries out for conflick, distress and upheavel. Please somebody at MDWFP contact, through those blessed little hunter cards we so diligently fill out, send out a request from those using the resource to offer soulutions to the problem before someone who doesn't use the resouce makes the knee jerk rules and over regulations hurting everone. Sorry MDWFP you blew this one. Say no to the draw. No to the 5:00 am races.

Let me clarify a couple of things from my prior post on this topic...

The draws for the CA blinds were well in advance of the season so you knew if you had a guaranteed spot or not...In other words, bring your 12 year old as a standby hunter at your own risk...

Second, by doing my part, I am referring to my bringing the Mississippi Hunting & Fishing Digest to Mississippi for MDWFP...I published it for two years at NO COST to MDWFP, using advertising sales to cover my costs and turn a profit....My service on the board of the Mississippi Sierra Club, Mississippi Wildlife Federation and NRCS State Technical Committee....My involvement in saving the Big Sunflower River from the Corps of Engineers dredge boat...My service with Mississippi Sportsmen Against Hunger and the 200,000+ pounds of deer meat we collected from hunters and donated to charities in 42 Mississippi counties...One year I personally skinned 105 deer for the MSAH program...My service with Delta Waterfowl (dates to the late 1980s when they were called the North American Wildlife Foundation) which began at least a decade before most of yall ever heard of them...And finally my involvement in conservation easements on 18,000 acres of wildlife habitat in LA and MS...

Many of yall have opinions about all sorts of things but very few of you (not all but very few) have been on the frontlines of the conservation AND environmental movement like I have...As such, you think that ENVIROS are your enemy when in fact, they SHOULD be your best friends...IN fact, hunters have more incentive than anybody to be RADICAL environmentalists because without wildlife habitat there is no wildlife and at a rate of 5000 acres of development PER DAY, EVERY DAY in this country, there wont be much wildlife habitat left in another generation. Note that 5000 acres per day of development is with a population of 300MM people...Wait til the country has the 500MM people forecast for 2100 and see how much wildlife habitat there is...Instead you stick with your tried and true so called "Conservative" agenda and your spinners and your corn feeders...

And I havent even mentioned GLOBAL WARMING yet...Incidentally, did yall hear what good old GWB had to say on that subject today? Go to the GW thread for direct quotes from our President on this subject and get Po Monkey Lounge's inevitable rationalizations and permutations about why you should join him in calling BS on the whole subject no matter what anybody says about it or no matter how much evidence there is that he is just flat out wrong.

Having once learned a thing or two about real estate, the idea that there wont be anywhere to hunt in 2100 is foolish. Sure, there may be 5000 acres developed per day in the entire country, but divide that by the land mass and it becomes pretty minute. On a historical standpoint, look at real estate development in mississippi over the past 100 years. Other than the coast, madison county, and desoto county, not much has really changed. the delta has become less developed, as it lost a significant amount of population. Highest and best use also becomes an issue, which is spurred by supply and demand. I dont think it is possible to generate enough demand to make much of a dent.

I guessing in 100 years, the delta will look just like it does now. Lots of flatland and crops, with woods, and wildlife, and a few asphalt parking lots. The 200 million increase will be primarily on the east and west coast, i would venture to say that this areas population will increase only slightly if at all. People are becoming more urban, and mississippi is still the woods. I dont really know, got other things to worry about, like when are we gonna find bigfoot?

Mmmmm...seems our grandfathers(or great grandfathers) are the ones that screwed it up with market hunting and punt guns. Around 1930, Mississippi's estimated deer herd was 7,000 animals, for example. We,ve come a long ways, but, still have a tough row ta hoe. In some cases more rules are better. Might just keep some kids daddy from being shot in the face on opening morning. I wish the state would invest in new properties. There aren't but two ways to clear up overcrowding on public land; get more land, or get rid of some hunters...

Anyways, don't most of you seasoned waterfowlers believe that duck hunter numbers are somewhat cyclical? I mean, a couple of tough seasons with too many hunters and too few ducks, and duck hunters go back to golf or deer hunting or whatever. If thats true, I think pressure will start to decrease.

I think you are right gator. Its seems the hunter numbers are cyclical during a single season. From what I gather from reading this thread, this WMA is a mad house the first week or two of the season and then it calms down leaving the place to the die hards that believe duck hunting is more than limiting out ever morning.

I could be wrong but I'm assuming the draw will give a guy a season pass to the WMA. Think about if some of these draws are given to fair weather hunters. They'll go opening weekend and maybe the next weekend, and decide they would rather go deer hunting the next couple of weeks. Now their draw is going unused, a guy that lives nearby that enjoys hunting before work on a Wed. won't be able to do so.

JD couldn't be more correct...I pray for a few more bad seasons (for all of you except me) and we can breathe a sigh of relief, at least till we get another one of those seasons and we are all feeling fruitful in sharing the harvest. Newbie comes out to his generous buddies hole, kills some ducks, slaps some stickers on and is now a pro.
