how much does it cost to shut off access to Moto-vehics?
I know one place that did it, and after all the yahoos quit running up and down the road, it doesn't cost the MDWFP and USACE as much money to keep it up.

not jumping in, but when i first started hunting ducks i was not able or up to walking 1/2 a mile. while i would gladly do it now i could not then. as a site we always talk about taking youth and exposing them. if people were only alowed to walk in wouldnt that cut off a large number of not only youths, but really old people to who have been hunting in these same holes for generations. just a thought.

oh, and tip............this past year i watched as 2 daddy's brought their 2 boys to a missouri CA and stood there w/ the rest of us..........bout 12 years old i'd guess.
and, bout an hour later i saw 2 little boys who'd been blowing them damned duck calls all morning leave, VERY disappointed they didn't get to hunt.

Well, the written comment deadline on this new proposed rule was May 14, and a public hearing was held back in April in New Albany, MS. According to a person I spoke to today at the MDWF&P, nothing surfaced from the written comments or the hearing to change the mind of the Wildlife Commission. Thus, this new proposed rule instituting a draw system for waterfowl hunting at this unnamed subject WMA is a done deal.
The deadline for getting into the draw will be in November. Prior to that time, the Dept. will have a place to go to on its website to fill out an application on-line, or to request a written application by mail. If you are drawn for a hunt, you wil be able to carry a guest with you.
While not the first WMA in MS to go to a draw system for waterfowl hunting, it is one of only a few, and the largest one to-date to do so. It will be interesting to see how it goes this first year. I am certain that some of you will let us know. This could be the future of all of our WMAs.

Having to explain to a couple of 12 year olds why they aren't going to get to hunt would be awful. That's enough to make me put up with the other issues instead of going to a draw. I hope the Mahannah plan works out for the best.
This situation is why I spend so much money to make sure I have a place for my family to hunt.

I am sure that it's been said before, but if you don't bother to show up at Commission meetings and/or provide written comments, don't take it for granted that they are going to consider (or even be aware of) your position on an issue.
My personal experience is that the Commission is very receptive to and interested in public opinion.
Let me clarify a couple of things from my prior post on this topic...
The draws for the CA blinds were well in advance of the season so you knew if you had a guaranteed spot or not...In other words, bring your 12 year old as a standby hunter at your own risk...
Second, by doing my part, I am referring to my bringing the Mississippi Hunting & Fishing Digest to Mississippi for MDWFP...I published it for two years at NO COST to MDWFP, using advertising sales to cover my costs and turn a profit....My service on the board of the Mississippi Sierra Club, Mississippi Wildlife Federation and NRCS State Technical Committee....My involvement in saving the Big Sunflower River from the Corps of Engineers dredge boat...My service with Mississippi Sportsmen Against Hunger and the 200,000+ pounds of deer meat we collected from hunters and donated to charities in 42 Mississippi counties...One year I personally skinned 105 deer for the MSAH program...My service with Delta Waterfowl (dates to the late 1980s when they were called the North American Wildlife Foundation) which began at least a decade before most of yall ever heard of them...And finally my involvement in conservation easements on 18,000 acres of wildlife habitat in LA and MS...
Many of yall have opinions about all sorts of things but very few of you (not all but very few) have been on the frontlines of the conservation AND environmental movement like I have...As such, you think that ENVIROS are your enemy when in fact, they SHOULD be your best friends...IN fact, hunters have more incentive than anybody to be RADICAL environmentalists because without wildlife habitat there is no wildlife and at a rate of 5000 acres of development PER DAY, EVERY DAY in this country, there wont be much wildlife habitat left in another generation. Note that 5000 acres per day of development is with a population of 300MM people...Wait til the country has the 500MM people forecast for 2100 and see how much wildlife habitat there is...Instead you stick with your tried and true so called "Conservative" agenda and your spinners and your corn feeders...
And I havent even mentioned GLOBAL WARMING yet...Incidentally, did yall hear what good old GWB had to say on that subject today? Go to the GW thread for direct quotes from our President on this subject and get Po Monkey Lounge's inevitable rationalizations and permutations about why you should join him in calling BS on the whole subject no matter what anybody says about it or no matter how much evidence there is that he is just flat out wrong.

Nice resume there Hammer. Good thing you are so humble.
Not sure what 99% of that post had to do with this thread, or why you called me out, but I'm just a dumb ol' "conservative" who has trouble understanding the relationships between "your favorite WMA"/draw system, your list of accomplishments and how you singlehandedly saved Mississippi, conservation, eviro radicals, spinners, corn feeders for deer, global warming, and my alleged ignorance. That was quite a feat trying to tie all of that together.

Well i think it sucks! Been hunting it for a long time some days are good some suck. Most of the time the crazy crap is just the beginning of the season after the first two weekends it dyes down. If ya hunt during the week ya really need a few folks there to keep the birds flying.
BUT this all started thanks to the article in the Clarion Ledger last year before season about all the work on the new DU impoundments at Mahanna. Everyone and thier brother decided to come out of the wood works.Thank god i just watched from the road opening day.
BUT if they would not have had the 5am rule there would not have been the accident that hurt someone. Boys racing to a hole gets cutt off and wrecks. That was the straw that broke the camels back. As for the early shooting they could have nipped it in the bud this year with some FEDS. That would have toned down the whole situation and we would not be going to a draw. I talked to one of the guys at Mahanna yesterday and he said they don't know whats gona happen. They are not even sure how to section it off , govern etc.....
Glad i gots a big river boat i can hunt bout 4 out of so the fun is still on.
