hunting report

Postby Wildfowler » Thu Jan 02, 2003 10:15 am

Went to a spot that I haven't visited in about 2 weeks because it has been completely devoid of ducks this year. For the first time this year for this spot, I ran a few out in while going in this morning.

I shot 2 and had a two other real serious inquires from overhead birds. Which was pretty exciting since I haven't had much of anything work my setup lately. Also ran some up on the ride in. This is the most I've seen for this area this season.

Bloody Mary/Nap time right now, but I feel like I could scratch out a couple more this afternoon. Also saw an eagle today.

Anyone else hunt this morning? Have anything exciting happen to them?

ducks

I went with a friend this morning to a private area that should have been wrapped up in ducks. We saw a few woodies and maybe 4 or 5 mallards. And to make matters worse,I killed my first duck of the season and couldn't get to him because of a ditch seperating us from him, which was about 10'deep.Was gonna float across to him on my decoy bag, but,my friend started freakin out on me.Was scared something would happen to me,so had to leave him there. We just haven't got any ducks here.Time to break out the rabbit dogs.

A buddy of mine and I went this morning to a bayou west of Shelby this morning and killed 9. Haven't hunted this spot since first of Dec. Saw a lot of ducks high but didn't act to interested. Got a few to give us a look. I really hope this front push some NEW ducks down. I believe this is the first time we've had the jet stream come from the north. Keep your fingers crossed. Best of luck!!! :D :D :D

Yes.....funny you should ask. 'Actually saw more turkeys than ducks. 'Were motoring in and a white blob smacked the water next to the boat........'put the Q-bean on'em and there were 2 hens in the top of a tall cypress.

Got set-up and had cackling hens all around us at normal 'fly-down' time. They would criss-cross the area we were set-up in. 'Bout 7:00, I was half asleep when this hen buzzed me from behind. I opened my eyes, saw it going straight away, and realized it had only cleared my head by a couple of feet. I've had teal do that.....but never a turkey......until now.

Hunted coldwater backwaters this morning. saw 4 woodies land on the "pond" about 200 yards away(on private land). saw 3 mergs and had 2 woodies buzz the dekes as soon as i went out to take them up. no big ducks...lots of woodpeckers and robins though! :( keep thinking that it has got to get better. really expected to see more this morning.
now,how did i miss that one?

hunted this morning too

Postby Skeeter » Thu Jan 02, 2003 8:28 pm

i hunted just south of rolling fork this morning....shot at 2, and killed 2....1 gadwall, 1 wood duck....however, i froze my pecker off....that wind was howling about 30 miles an hour over that open water, although the temp was about 40 degrees....i was still a little shocked though, i really thought this morning was going to better than usual....usual as in better than any other day this season...nah....i guess being set up in the freakin wrong direction didnt help much either.....i saw a bunch of snow geese though, and that's been a first for this season for that area....maybe a good sign...rumor has it the next 10-12 days are suppose to real cold up north and at least freezing here.....

HA HA HA,

Well it must be catching or else I am turning "BEARDED CLAM". Because I froze mine off too today. I don't know why I got so cold today. I did shoot 5 ducks today in spite of my frozen anatomy. Mostly passing shots. I Widgeon "whistled" a single drake Widgeon in to the spread. I thought that was kind of funny.

Otherwise, nothing too noteworthy.
