Heartworms?????

gator, my vet said the same...no reason to change....heartguard given properly should do the job. He said he has only had 1 + dog in 2 years on it that he knew or felt certain that the owners were staying on schedule.

He then went on to say that IVER at .10/10lbs is like a triple dose of HG and will not negatively effect dogs. He seemed to think it was over kill, but I can live with that.

I'm sure some on straight IVER come up with HW's, but why pay the extra money if it is not working any better....just the way I look at it.

BLF 16 months old heart worm positive, been on heartgard since the vet told me to put her on it.

YLM 6 years old heart worm negative, i first got this dog when he was 5yo no known background or medical history, went in as soon as i got him he tested positive for heartworms (light positive case) gave him the first shot - whatever the vet does for the normal hw treatment, crated him for 6 weeks then at this point started him on just the normal Heartguard ONLY. tested him again about 8 months later totally clean of heartworms. *The only reason i halfway believe in their product.

CLM 3 years old pos. for heartworms been on heartgard whole life. This dog belongs to Billyho please pm him for more info. I do know that when his was cured he in fact switched to interceptor.

Most owners mix their Ivo with water, but some do not. We've always mixed with water because the vet told us that straight Ivo will burn their stomach's up. I do know this much. If your dog has heartworms and you give them Ivo, it will put a hurting on them.

I had two dogs test positive early last summer. Both were on ivermec. Both were at a professional kennel at the time. One other dog in the kennel tested positive during the same time period. I am extremely confident of the professional kennels' ability to treat dogs. I still have one of these dogs at the kennel and they still use ivermec, allthough they have increased the dosage for all dogs. I also give the kennel Heartguard to use on the 15th of the month on my dog.

My older dog that stays at home all the time has always been on Heartguard and has been negative all her life.

I know of 7 other dogs last summer that tested positive. These dogs were all in performance invironments and I am confident of the owners treatment protocals. They used Ivermec, Hearguard, and Interceptor. They all failed. In my opinion, and in the opinion of two local vets that I discuss this issue with regularly, there has been a break in resistance that has not been identified. I also know that Auburn University is conducting research on this very issue.

I am sticking with the twice a month treatment until someone can tell me of a better way.

Yes, only because I have no confidence in any off the products after what I studied last spring and summer. Both vets that I consult with do not see any problem with this methodology. One vet is doing the same with his personal dogs but is using interceptor.

had a 5 yr old come up positive last year and he was on liquid ivormectin. I know of at least 200 dogs I can point a finger at right now at kennels in arkansas and louisiana that are treated with straight ivormectin.

I also know of 3 other FT dogs that were positive off of liquid ivormectin in north mississippi.

Honestly IMHO the only way to up your odds at this time would be to move away from the delta area.......just my 2 cents though.

Like Gator said all you can do is all you can do, give em the treatment and hope you aren't in that few percent that test positive.

It would make perfect sense that we hear about heartguard's positives the most because they are used a significantly amount more than other forms, BUT don't for one second think liquid ivormec is a foolproof way! I laugh when I see people say that knowing what I know and the amount of dogs that have come up positive on it. IMHO there isn't one treatment better than another out there.

The reasons I use liquid is not for the cost at all (heck I spend so much money on these dogs why would I ever hesitate to spend on heartworm preventative?) but I have more confidence in being able to control the dosing myself instead of a generic amount that is used in other preventatives that uses vast weight ranges.

2 BLM's tested positive February '06. Both were 5 years old. Both on Interceptor at the time and had been for about 3 years running.

Currently dosing Ivomec on the first, Intercpetor on the 15th.

are you guys using the ivormectin they sell at the co-op for cattle-the injectable and just giving it by mouth-this was the word on the street-is this the .1mg/10lb??

My vet told me last week that he had no confidence in either Heartguard or Interceptor. I am now using Heartguard on the 1st day of the month and Advantage Multi on the 15th. Also using Advantix on the 1st.

Had a 5 year old lab test positive for heartworms in November of 2006. Never missed a treatment of Heartguard. Heartguard did pay for the entire treatment but I'm not using them now.

Pulled this old post up. Tommy's dog came up with worms the other day, starting treatment monday. Just curious as how it worked out for ya'll.

have a 4 1/2 female that got them when she was about 2 had on heartguard. switched to interceptor and have had any problems with them coming back
