We will suck again ... maybe after this year, Croom will be canned by the incoming AD. He is a good man with good morals but an aweful football coach.

Well, why we are on the topic of football and Croom maybe being out, who would come to MSU and coach. It is going to be very tough to persuade a good caliber coach to come here and get things going again. I think UM founf that out before hiring "O". Will we end up with an assistant from a better program and hope he can mimic what was going on wherever he cam from? Although Jackie faltered towards the end, he came here and did a great job for a good while. I do not see us getting another chance at that type coach again. I like Tommy West at Memphis. I also like the coach at Cincinatti. Do not know much about who the top assistants are looking for a head coaching job? Think it is for sure time to keep your eyes and ears open though

Mississippi State has one major plus going for it. It is in the SEC, which admittedly can be a minus too as it makes it tough to win. Most coaches are egomaniacs and like trying their hand against the "best." That can lure a good coach.

The way I see it State really has two options to turn the program around via a coach. They can go after someone like Rick Neuheisel who, like JS, has a less than stellar reputation, but is a great coach. Gary Barnett is another coach in this fold. The second option is to go after an up and comer with a lot of energy and intelligence. Those coaches are out there.

I think, because of geography, MSU will always have a hard time recruiting with the LSU, Florida and Auburns of the world. Therefore, whoever the coach is that they pursue has to be a developer of talent as well as have a keen eye for underrated talent. Frank Beamer at VaTech is a prime example of all of this. He developes talent, always plays great defense and has the best special teams in the nation. If you do that, you will win way more than you lose.

This next sentence is not meant to be a slap in the face of State or Ole Miss fans, but when either of these schools land an up and comer that is a winner (Tuberville is the last one that comes to mind for the schools), the real problem will be keeping them around because of lack of resources and money. Of course, the plus side of this is that if your coach is good enough to move on to "greener" pastures, chances are you have had some good seasons in the mean time.

That is why, although I have lost some respect for Saban, I will always feel grateful to him in a way. He left us with a MNC.

"..the real problem will be keeping them around because of lack of resources and money".

au contraire, UM has the money and resources ---- but, our adm. will not spend a lot of it on athletics ----what we lack is the necessary commitment to win in the SEC ---we still run our athletics programs like a mom and pop organization, with heavy emphasis on the GOB network

but, the winds of change are on the horizon.......a sleeping giant, rampaging beast is waiting to be awakened  ....until then, we are Danger Mouse

Chit, screwed the pooch on that one. Should say one that refuses to have losing seasons. We definitely have a loser in power now.

I thought that is where the money and resources at Ole Miss came from. I know that Ole Miss has some extremely wealthy alumni, but does it have the resources to pay Saban money (which is soon to be Meyer, Richt, Tuberville, Carroll, Brown money)?

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. It would have been cheaper to resurrect the Bear than to hire Saban..........[/quote]

He put 92,000 fans in the seats for their spring intra-sqad scrimmage, I'm not a tide fan, or even a $aban fan but do the math and you see he has already begun paying for himself.

Oh, and State fans until you can match that kind of rabid support you will always suck in the SEC :? :? :? :?

'I know that Ole Miss has some extremely wealthy alumni, but does it have the resources to pay Saban money'

Nope, see above, It doesn't matter how wealthy the alumni are if they don't build the facilities and put the fannies in the seats. The game in the SEC is about money and who can spend the most of it. It has nothing to do with coaching skill. Any decent coach can take a hundred million dollar a year program and win against a 20, 30, or 40 million a year program. It is those programs that have the money like Auburn and Florida that cost Shula his job and the question becomes, how many coaches are going to be willing to come to a school that has a mid major program in a major conference when he knows coming in that he will never be able to compete on a level playing field no matter how much money you pay him personally.

That's why I spend my Saturday's in Hattiesburg rooting on a quality coach who fields a quality football team year in and year out.
