Warm up north

Postby Big Lou » Mon Dec 16, 2002 9:10 pm

Spoke with a friend today from Indy. He said they got 2 inches of snow then it warmed up to 50's. The lows tonight are around 34 tonight. This warn weather is melting all the snow and ice. They will be feeding hard in Illinois! Damm this warm Weather! Any one else talk to friends up north?

Reading the various state DNR sites I found that as of 12/10 one waterfowl survey area in SD was holding over 250,000 ducks and close to 350,000 big geese.

No snow cover, no lock out freeze and the birds will not move, they don't need to. And it isn't feds feeding them. It is crops left in the field that were not worth picking due to drought. Thousands of acres just left in the field. Farmers only cut enough to prove to the banks that it was a bust.
If the snow does not cover that stuff we will not get a full fledged migration.

Well it in Central Illinois it was 49 yesterday, expected 52 and thunderstorms today, and 58 tomorrow w/ thunderstorms. The farm ponds are still frozen but most all the other water is wide open. Whatever isn't will be open after these showers come through.

Lots of ducks coming from the South, season ends Sunday so all the pressure will be off them to move.

I know that isn't the kind of news y'all wanted to here.

I know weather plays a tremendous role in when and how many ducks we get down south, but I swear I think that total duck numbers are WAY down right now. IMHO you can take all that DU crap about population estimates and toss it out the truck window with that empty Bud light. The only one that will prove to be worth anything is the beer can that some old guy finds on the side of the road and recycles. Notice how many reasons we (me included) have come up with in the last three or four years as to why the motherload of ducks hasnt got here yet, ie the great feeding scams, lost crops, warm weather etc.? My belief is plain and simple WE JUST AINT GOT THE NUMBERS RIGHT NOW! Hopefully we will have a good breeding season this spring and get back to the good ole days.

I spoke to my friend in Louisiville today and he told me that it is forecasted for some heavy rains at the end of this week, but then it should turn cold again and stay cold.

if that ducks banded, I shot it.

I know it is warm up north there where alot of crops left in the fields, Yet i can not remember the last time I saw as many ducks the first two weeks of the season. Now it seems they have left us. Its still early in the season hopefully we can see these numbers later in the season :!:
