Hey Trav, Speak'n of Cripples & Dogs . . .

Postby QuackerTracker » Wed Dec 11, 2002 10:57 am

You otta see my new pooch. It's a long story, but you might get a kick out of it. Last september I was cutt'n beans when I looked out the window and saw a dog limp'n along beside my combine. I left him alone for a couple of days but I left him some food out a the farm shop sos he wouldn't starve. Wulp, after a couple of days, I got to feel'n sorry for em, so I picked him up to ride the combine with me. Still left him in the park'n lot of the shop but he rode the combine with me every day for two weeks. Eventually, I decided nobody waz com'n to pick up the pooch, so I decided he was mine and took em to the vet. I figured he was displastic, but the vet said "no dumbass, his leg's broke in three places, his pelvis is broke, and he's got buckshot in his ass." So I agreed to let the vet take a shot at fix'n em up, and $1,000.00 later I brought home my new bionic pooch, complete with steele pin in leg. Given that he'd had the liv'n piss beat outta him, I decided to name him "Blue", cause I figured that's what my disposition would be if I were in his position. Wulp, it appears that in inserting the steel pin in Blue's leg, the vet damaged a major nerve, which must have caused a tingleing sensation. I hypothisize this because two weeks after having moved into our new home, Blue chewed his leg off in my house. The wife was not terribly happy, either with me or my new best friend. It was at this point that I also came to the realization that Blue was almost entirely def. Back to the vet we go, so that he can finish the job that Blue started in my living room floor. After having the rest of the dog's leg amputated, we brought em home for a fresh start. Unfortunately, Blue's fresh start commenced with him eating all the staples out of his new stump. Again, the wife was not happy. All that being said, he began hunting with me this year: my three-legged anomoly of a retriever. He's def, three leged, slow, and don't see very well, but he's got a great nose, and in 16 days he's retrieved 300 birds, and he hasn't let a single one get away. Toughest dog I've ever seen, and I have never had a dog more loyal than this boy.

Best I can tell, Blue's 100% black lab, all 58 pounds of him. Only drawback I've seen so far is that he don't do real well over ice. Kinda has a balance issue, ya know. But I'm tell'n ya, the dog is tough. When I went to pick him up after his amputation, the vet called me in to tell me how the dog was doing. I was pretty concerned, but the vet was laugh'n, so I asked him what was so funny. He said that he had just gotten back from takin Blue to take a wiz, and that when they got out there, Blue hiked the wrong leg and fell down -- had no idea that his leg was gone.
