For me it seems very hard to justify baiting deer in terms of fair chase hunting...I mean how can you argue that setting a timer, hunting 30 minutes bfefore the timer and 30 minutes after the timer is fair chase?
But what really concerns me is that we need the corn to make ethanol to reduce US oil imports to reduce servicemen and women dying in the Middle East...Same goes for driving more energy efficient vehicles, using florescent light bulbs, etc...
Granted, ethanol is not the end game of energy independence but it is an important first step...If you bait deer with corn, the blood of American soldiers is on your hands...Same goes for big SUV's and P/Us of which I own 3 (two Expeditions, one F-150)...
I am guilty but not for much longer...ASAP, I will sell/trade the Expeditions in favor of a Hybrid Escape...The P/U will be parked except hunting season and I will drive a small, economy car except when towing and hauling...
BTW, the first oil crisis was in 1973...At that time the US imported 30% if its oil...Today we import 70% of our oil...Something has got to give....I'll do my part- how about you?

That is absolutely nuts. Its kinda scary somebody can actually believe something like this.
Come on guys step up and take responsibility...We are all responsible for our energy dependence on the Middle East and that is why we give a rats booty about Iraq...Granted we needed to teach the SOBs a lesson but we could have done that and gotten the heck out of there 3 years ago if not for the strategic oil interests...I am not saying this is good or bad, I am just saying it is waht it is...
The numbers dont lie...In 1973, the US imported 30% of its oil...Today we import 70% of our oil...Unless you dont own a car or any other gasoline burning engine, you- like me- are part of the problem...
Incidentally, I sold one of my Expeditions today and will trade the other one tomorrow...I have to keep my truck for work purposes but as soon as I can afford it, I'll trade the conventional gas burner for a flex fueler or biodiesel burner...
The linkage between corn ethanol and baiting is that biating was promoted bythe farm interests that had no market for their alfatoxin infected corn...They now have a market- ethanol- and the pressue those farm interests are exerting on legislatures is decreasing...Now te muscle is coming from the baiting industry suppliers, many of whom make other hunting products...It is up to us to put the pressure on them to drop the pressure (ie giving money to pass baiting bills)

Hey Hammer, I recently heard something in the news stating farming of animals to be sold for meat does more harm to the environment than all of the energy consumption in the world. Now I have no clue whether or not this is true; probabaly not. But if it were, would you be willing to "do your part" and give up meat?
I dont know the statistics on animal husbandry in terms of GHG emissions...Some of that would result from CAFOs which in fact are developing methane capture systems to recycle the methane gas for energy purposes (as are landfills)...This is a good example of technology turning lemons into lemonade...I dont believe all the dire predictions of lifestyle changes related to GW but there will be new costs/taxes that reflect the true cost of production of virtually all goods and services in the world economy...THat is what the EU-ETS is all about...Markets that reflect carbon emissions...
I eat an occassional steak and would continue to do so regardless fo GW but I wont complain when the price goes up once GHG taxes are in place...
But the truth is that we eat a lot more deer, dove, duck and turkey than we eat steak...
Incidentally, accoring to http://www.drivinggreen.com, I could pay them about $250 per year to offset the ANNUAL C02 emissions from my 2006 F-150 4X4...Instead, I'll plant a coouple of extra acres of trees.

So we could pay to "offset" our co2 emissions.... the co2 emissions will still be there... what is the point, somebody gets rich b/c it makes us feel better about spewing co2 because we bought a few "certificates"?
I recently read an article ( http://billhobbs.com/2007/02/more_on_gore.html ) on hypocrit Al Gore doing this to offset his $30,000 a year energy bill on his mansion, but the company he was paying in to to get his "green certificates", is one in which he is a founder

I am not saying this to bash you, I agree with some of what you say, most certainly not the "blood on your hands" BS!!! , but we should be looking at alternatives for fuel and get off the oil teet.
Good idea on the trees, they will do more good with one branch, than any "certificates" will do by the thousands.

Well if they would get an E85 station anywhere near the Jackson Metro station I would be happy to use it.. Right now it is not even an option for most of the people in MS.
