Can This Be Done?

Postby stonekold » Mon Sep 03, 2001 8:02 pm

I have an old Remington pump. It has a 30"full choke barrel. I would like to have about 4" cut off and then threaded to accept remchokes. Can this be done, or should I just spend $150 for a new barrel?

Yes it can be done, but I don't know if it will be cheaper than $150.00 Your barrel has to be thick enough to do it, most Remingtons are. Briley does thin wall choke tubes, Polychoke is still in business ($135.00), and a good gunsmith can install others(Invectors).

A gunsmith can do it for much cheaper. I had it done on a 10ga. and it was not but $75 for the cutting, threading and two choke tubes.

The only trick is to take it to someone who can do it without the rib coming loose when you cut it back.

My dad is a gunsmith and has performed choke tube installations many times. The problem with many older Remington barrels is they are too thin to accept their own tube thread if they didn't come with tubes. This cuts your options down considerably and forces you to go with thinwall tubes. From experience thinwall tubes don't take well to steel for extended periods of shooting. Most any competent gunsmith with the correct tools can do the job for less than $100 but for ease of availability I'd look for a new barrel. There is a gun show in Jackson this weekend and sometimes you can locate used barrels for a reasonable amount.

What I have is a 30" barrel with full choke. I would like to make it a 26" barrel with the abilty to screw in a modified and improved cylinder choke. I am only using it for lead shot (doves and skeet) I bought a new gun for 3 1/2 shot. If I could find a used barrel for under $100 I would go that way. Thanks for the info.
