Singer Gentry Sentenced in Bear Killing

Published: 2/27/07, 11:05 PM EDT

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - Troy Lee Gentry, of the country singing duo Montgomery Gentry, has been sentenced to three months of probation and a $15,000 fine for killing a captive black bear. He also must give up hunting in Minnesota for five years.

Gentry pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in November. Under a plea deal, he agreed to forfeit the bear and the bow he used during the hunt near Sandstone. The 600-pound bear has been part of a taxidermy display at Gentry's home in Tennessee. He was sentenced Friday.

The bear was killed in October 2004 at the 80-acre Minnesota Wildlife Connection. Owner Lee Marvin Greenly sold the bear for $4,650 and orchestrated the hunt, which Gentry videotaped and edited to make it appear the bear had been killed in a fair chase hunt, according to authorities.

Not that I am for filming stuff like that and acting like it is fair chase, but is killing a captive bear illegal?

I'd say that it's the availability of quail and pheasants. I spoke with a guy last fall about getting some chukkar before I went to Kansas pheasant hunting so I could do a little upland training. (I didn't get to do it though) Anyway, he said they had something like 50,000. I seriously doubt there are 50,000 "tamie" bears available for hunting. Also this is just ONE guy with quail/pheasants/chukkar...there are probably 10 just like him in Mississippi alone.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

just poking a little fun at them boys that shoot pen raised deer, pheasants, quail. They get out their digital cameras and take pics., and show topwaters what good hunters they are. I would say 80% of hunting shows on tv are like this, if you have ever hunted iowa pheasants , ms. deer & quail you would have to agree.
