Beretta hanging up??????

Postby backwater » Sun Dec 08, 2002 10:28 pm

Maybe some of you gun guys can help me out with this one. My fairly new AL390 is hanging up on me. It's only happened twice but damn this gun is brand new. Two ducks are still flying right now due to this misfortune. It's only had app. 500 rounds through it and I've kept nice and clean. Any ideas? Don't won't to visit the gunsmith if I don't have to.

Make sure the gas port's at the end of forearm are cleaned out.

I know this may sound silly, but exactly what do you mean by "hanging up"? It helps to know a little bit more about the problem. Is it stove piping? Failure to eject the first round? Ejects the first but won't chamber the second? It could be several things depending on what it is doing. Several folks on this board can probably help if you give us a little more information.

Beretta 390...

Postby RotDorn » Mon Dec 09, 2002 7:44 am

2 things to look at on the 390.

1. as previously stated look at the gas ports, and piston area. Make sure the area is clean.

2. (This is what got me!) The recoil spring on the 390's is bad about rusting! yes, rusting. This was a serious design issue, IMNSHO! The spring piston, and receiver extention need to be replaced with a stainless steel unit. (Brownell's has it for ~$125). Otherwise you can disassemble the unit, polish everything out with a dremel tool. Hone the extention out with a homemade hone. Soak everything in like 90wt gear oil, and reassemble.

If you don't feel comfortable doing this drop me a line at RotDorn@midsouth.rr.com I live in Cordova, and will be happy to help you fix this issue if you need it.

..mine got rained on 1 time, and this situation occured. I did some research and discovered this design flaw. The stainless fix is great, I just haven't sunk the $ into it.......yet. Mebbe after Christmas.

GC,
It's not ejecting the first round after firing. Shell hangs up in the ejection port. Should've explained it better. It comes and goes. Did it twice on me yesterday...one cycle after another. As far as ammo...first time I was shooting Federal Tungsten then I loaded up some Kent #2's. I'm pretty sure both had previously been dropped in the water but they had time to dry out...would that cause an ejection problem??? I took the gun apart last night and the internal parts looked pretty clean. Thanks for the help guys!

Torch is right. Use it for a paddle and get a pump gun.

After I made the above mod, mine works fine everytime, with skeet to 3". After shooting this gun, all my others stay in the safe!

I'VE BEEN HUNTING WITH A BERETTA ABOUT 5 YEARS NOW AND MINE DID THE SAME THING FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR DURING DOVE SEASON. ALL I DID WAS BREAK IT DOWN AND CLEAN IT GOOD AND KEEPING IT OILED. SINCE I HAVE PUT AT LEAST 400 ROUNDS THROUGH IT AND NO PROBLEMS. DON'T DO AS TORCH ADVISED AND GET A PUMP IF HE WASN'T SO TIGHT WITH HIS BENS HE COULD GET AN AUTOMATIC. VMAN

Got a 390 myself and the number one thing you have to do is clean it well and keep good quality lubricant on parts. Do not just wd40 it and let it go. Break it down a couple of times a season and put Gunslick or some other good lubricant on it. I have no problems and shoot everything from light target to heavy 3". I think you may be going too long between cleaning and lubing. Did I say "good quality" lube?

My 390 has never failed me. Every Sunday night, after I get home from the Delta, I take it apart and clean it good. I use RemOil on it, works very well for me. The 390 is really easy to take apart, it only takes a few minutes to insure that it will work flawlessly the next time I go.

It sounds to me ike your stock spring is either cruddy or weak.
