double retrieves

Postby quakwacker » Tue Jan 30, 2007 12:06 pm

Major does really good with singles thrown by me and other people.
I have been working with him on doubles and have run into a problem.
I started by throwing on in front of me and then one directly behind me.
He does good with that.
I then started to try and close the gap a little bit. Now he goes to get the first on and then darts straight to the other bird without bringing the first one back.
He will try and get them both in his mouth at the same time.
He tries it for a minute and then gives up and brings me the first bird without ever having dropped it.
What can I do to fix this problem.
He does the same thing in the water too.

the same thing happen to me at first, i just called like crazy to get her back to me after the first one and once she did i praised her and got her to get the other one, she followed every time after that.....
If it wasn't for bad luck then i would have no luck at all........

use the corner of your house as a divider.
throw one bumper to one side and the other 45 degrees to the other side.

dogg has no choice but to return to you with it, then move yourself farther from the wall 'til eventually there is nothing dividing the two bumpers.

Use a check-cord or just stop doing doubles until the dog has been properly conditioned to pressure & then you can correct him. Right now you don't have the "tools" to correct him, so you'll just end up confusing him if you try to correct him for picking up the wrong one.

I got that from another board member, I think.

I would give props where they are due, but I can't remember where I got it?

I use the corner of a house as well as check cords. Something else I like to do is throw one mark short and the other long. This forces the pup to pick one or the other and somewhat commit to it.
