2007 WILDROSE BRITISH OPEN RETRIEVER CHAMPIONSHIP

The 7th annual Wildrose British Open Retriever Championship will be held at the Wildrose Kennel training facility in Oxford, Mississippi. This year’s competition promises to be a most interesting and challenging event. Now, retriever enthusiasts (all breeds) have the opportunity to run in a UK-Style working test, identical to those experienced in British, Scotland and Ireland. This is the type test the US Retriever Teams faced in the UK in May, 2004.

The Wildrose Championship is the perfect opportunity for retriever enthusiasts to experience first hand what it’s like to run a trial in the UK where gamefinding abilities are the hallmark of a “winner.” This is the only trial (test) of this type in North America.

Registration will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. and the trial will conclude that evening with awards of silver trophies from England for 1st through 4th place and a gun’s award. This unique gundog event is scheduled to be covered by the Retriever Journal as it has been for the past three years.

Guests are welcome in the trial gallery.

Participating Dog Registration Requirements:
• No bitches in heat on the grounds
• No aggressive dogs toward people or other dogs
• No electric training devices.
• All dogs are run off leash without a collar in the trial.
• All dogs on premises mush be on a leash.
• Medical records must be presented at registration indicating current vaccination for:
Bordetella, Kennel cough, Parvo/corona and rabies

Barbeque will be available for guests and participants to purchase for lunch.

I was afraid you where gonna say that. Thats the same weekend as southern flights hunt test. One of these years its gonna work out I can come win that gig with a 'hi strung' american field bred doggie. hehe.

If you got any input on dates, try to work it away from that weekend next year... either earlier, or much more preferable, may. travis

Come run it Travis. Theres a lot of pitfalls for the hunt test dog other than steadiness though. The tests often don't allow you to exploit a lot of whats trained into a HT dog. My HRCH dog who I think is solid at the finished level now has never done better than 4th place. Somehow they have a way of making her blow it at some point in that trial. I'm going to give it another try with her this year.

Not on that date brother. I wouldnt miss southern flight for anything. Been to our hunt test pissing blood and high on percocet before... wouldnt let a kidney stone stop me, for sure wont let another event stop me.

Pitfalls or not, Im pretty sure the rowdy dogg would be up to the task. Dont worry, when it comes time I can run it, I will be consulting with you about particulars. I wont enter it lightly, I will be prepared to win it when I go. travis

Do they take all comers or do they pick who gets to play?

As far as I know its open to anyone. It is a TOTALLY different game. Its set up different, bird placements different, and its judged different. If try to run it handling as you would a hunt test it is frustrating. The last 2 years I've had what I felt was one of the best if not the best trained dog there and she's not done that well. Some of it was failure on my part to handle "their" way but mostly my dog would do so poorly on one of about 6 series that we were out of the money.

Somehow the set up really gets a dog worked up. More than a hunt or a hunt test. That tendency over the course of a whole day with the dog out of the truck is for the dog to finally boil over and either have steadiness issues or go self employed and fall into a sand trap-at least thats how its been for us.

The championship coincides with two training seminars that Wildrose holds every year. At that point in time Vic Barlow has been here and has been involved with it. Ya just gotta pick what's important to ya....if ya wanna try and beat a dog at the British style game ya gotta come to this one. At least this year you do.

The Days Inn in Oxford allows dogs if you want to come up and watch and bring your dog with you. Thursday and Friday there is a handlers workshop. It might be full, but if not you can get in on that as well.

I ran it the first year and had a blast. My dog was 15 months and all american field trial blood lines. He finished third then. It was very challenging and difinitely different. I would recommend trying it.

Yeah ckc hunt tests, fashioned after the wildrose trial. Never seen stewart do anything I didnt think was smart, but him lending credibilty with his assocation to ckc is mindboggling. Hope it works out well for him, but I cant see how you can have a name like him and get in cohoots with an outfit like that, and come out ahead.

and who knows, if they get ckc hunt tests going, maybe be an influx of people to hrc after they figger out they've been had. I got plans to register a billy goat with the ckc and see how far I can go in the games! bwhahaha. travis
