An enjoyable morning

Postby Double R 2 » Thu Jan 25, 2007 4:54 pm

Had a great time hunting some north delta timber with my buddy gator. In addition to being one of the very best decoy (female canines) I ever had the pleasure to hunt with, his talent at making one of the very best cups of coffee ever enjoyed at 2:30 in the morning, and his excellent retriever, Gage, my friend gator is better than a rabbit's foot and 4-leaf clover put together: we're batting a solid 0.500 as it stands now. Bling. And he goes by gator for a reason - that boy will hunt until the cow comes home while soaked to the bone (found that out this morning; we'll not talk about my score-10 nose dive last week). Went back to some old stomping grounds north of 82 this morning and, despite a relative paucity of birds, managed a solid hunt. I ought to quit while I'm ahead but, well, there are still a few days left.

I shot both ringers, first two all year, and danged proud of it. Just pure wingshooting wise, I may like them best of all.

Nice hunting.

DR2, you still interested in going to the river this weekend? I've been pretty tied up, but I might try to hit it Saturday morning.

I s'pose since double's showing off and stretching his funny bone a bit, I best do the same....

today was extremely special for me, probably much more than double will ever know but gauge and i crossed a milestone of sorts --- 100 birds for the year. now, i know, 100 birds ain't nothing to ALOT of folks on here but you must bare in mind that 9 mornings out of 10, my journal reads "HUNTERS: me and gauge".

I told ramsey this morning in the truck that this morning meant a bunch and why. I even went so far as to say, I'd rather have the 2 retrieves we need to reach that mark versus a banded black duck (IMHO, the KING of ducks) which is a good thing considering his lucky butt killed another banded duck hunting w/ me  . Ya see, when we aren't hunting, we're training.......20 degrees or 120, it doesnt matter -- we're out there. Many a mile has been logged to train or go run a weekend HT, but days like today or yesterday or the day before.................well, they burn images in my head that I can't explain. To some, it's about bands or greenheads and pintails on a strap, or traveling the world, or finding that new place. Well, it's all that to me as well, but to a man, it's the retrieve that cranks my turbine. That defining moment when you say to yourself, "Had it not been for Gauge, I wouldn't have this limit." And the good Lord has blessed me w/ 100+ retrieves from my friend this year.

Just don't get much better than you, a bud, and your BEST bud....here's mine:

gonne crop a bit on this pic, but thought i'd post a "rough draft"......looks better printed out, i promise.

Only a few more days guys, make the most of em, gator
