I'll be heading to King Salmon Lodge check it out at http://www.kingsalmonlodge.com, its an orvis lodge so I'm sure they have some top notch equipment that you can use but its something that I've been wanting to get into anyway so this is my excuse to go ahead and buy a rig, the good thing is everyone has been telling me that the 8wt. is also good for redfish which I hear is a blast in itself. I've been looking at some different rigs but I'm a little over whelmed, I want to invest in good worth while equipment and don't mind spending some money on it but at the same time can't afford to drop a huge bank roll on it, I have to believe its like everything in that there are some great deals out there, I just don't have the knowledge or expertise to pick'em out.

Sandy, does the Lodge itself have an Orvis shop in it, or a place you can purchase the rod, reel, line, etc? If so, I would wait to get rigged up when you get there, after some advice from those pros on what you need, and let them rig your set up for you with all the fancy knots and all.

Or, if no shop on the premises, go to the nearest Orvis shop, tell them where you are going, and let them get you set up right. I promise you, it is worth the extra trouble to have these pro shop Orvis folks set up your rig for you, expecially if you are a beginner. You don't want to hook up with a nice trophy only to lose it due to a mistake in rigging.

I don't think they have one on the premises, I did talk to the one here in Baton Rouge and he said he can get me rigged up, if I buy from him it comes with an hour of casting lessons, if not and I just want casting lessons he charges 35 an hour which I thought was pretty reasonable. I'm just a little concerned that he'll get me rigged up then ring me up at the register for about $800.

You can certainly get in a setup for less than $800. I would not want to spend much less than 350-400, as that would be a good quality setup that you could use anywhere. if it was me, I would try to look at other companies other than orvis... not quite what they used to be back in the day. Dont get me wrong, they make good stuff, but there is just so much else out there. If you want some help send me an email,

I highly reccommend Orvis rods, but watch out with anything else - things get overpriced in an Orvis store in a hurry.

As for rods, I like Sage, Winston, or Thomas & Thomas.

As for reels, I use Loop or Abel.

All of my rods are 9 ft and make sure whichever reel you decide on that it's a "large arbor" reel. Most top of the line rods carry a lifetime guaranty.

I was told some negative stuff about Orvis lodges. You can pay $25,000 and get that designation. Most struggling lodges use that as a last resort to market their lodge. The best destinations don't have to do much marketing due to their reputation and repeat business. Orvis never visits these operations. Its just another source of income for them.

for a good reel youll spend on average about 230$ for a good large arbor reel and a good bit more for a good rod

sandy creek,i have been fly fishing since a boy and have always used orvis clearwater 6wt rod and clearwater 5/6wt reel.I would suggest a clearwater 8wt rod in 9ft tip flex,battienkill reel with disk drag,35# gel-spun backing,and weight forward floating8wt wonderline,cordura case to haul it in.Prices are rod-189,reel-75,backing is a upgrade to new reel-10$ extra,fly line-56,case-35.Warranty as stated in orvis cat.-25 yr warranty,step on it,close the door on it,run over it with a truck,it doesn't matter,we'll repair it.If we can't we will replace it!I closed the rod box on mine and sent it back on 1-12-07,my new rod,bag and pvc carrier came to me on 1-22-07,10 days later and no charge.That's a lot for a combo I know but it may very well be the last one you ever buy unless you lose it or it gets stolen!
