Changing decoy spread

Postby tknight » Tue Jan 16, 2007 8:28 pm

I know later in the year some say to pair up your decoys and take some away from your spread, do any of you do this? does it seem to help? If you change em up what type of formation seems to work best for you? We hunt a soybean field and have about 7 dozen out

After today I will be pairing mine up and putting about 2 dozen out. I watched a flock in a soy bean hole this afternoon and every single drake had a hen right beside him. Them orange legs are starting to brighten up!

Regardless of timing (early-season, late-season), I will NEVER, EVER put out two dozen decoys. Either put out way less or way more.

Seriously.

Are you reasoning that everybody and his uncle is putting out 2 dz. and the ducks are hip to that?

Well the flock I saw consisted of 25. That's about 2 dozen isn't it? All were in pairs and I'm killing ducks that way so I'm not worried!

Well, if we don't get some more birds......on the last day of the season, I'm going to put-out 2 dozen. I figure it'll take about that many to get my message across, clearly.

Formation? I'm going to use one I've never used before and arrange them in the outline of a 1-finger salute.......and that wouldn't be the index finger, either.

WHATEVER or rather, however many you put out, MAKE SURE YOU PUT OUT AN "ODD" NUMBER.

11 or 13, NEVER 12

5 or 7, 23 or 25, etc etc.

If the pairing method doesn't work. Put out one hen and 23 greenheads and make a train. Opps, better make that 24 greenheads so as to make it an odd number divisible by 5
