David Beckham announced today that he will be coming to America to play for the LA Galaxy and will be payed a reported $250 million over 5 years. I am not a soccer fan, so maybe I am missing something, but that seems to be the biggest waste of money I have ever heard of. As I understand it, he is only a part-time starter for his current team and is not even on England's national team anymore because he is not good enough. I realize that he is supposed to be the Brad Pitt of sports, but can they really sell enough merchandise to compensate for a $250 Million investment? Soccer will never be in the US what it is globally. We have real football here.

He'll put butts in seats, especially in LA. And since MLS isn't anywhere near the level of competition that he was playing while in the Spanish league or near the level of competition of a World Cup, he should do quite well.
Fact of the matter is that when these global superstars get old, they're still better than a lot of what you see in MLS today. Plus they're global superstars, even if they're older. Win/win for the league. Soccer won't ever become this country's love, but there's enough athletes and enough money here for the U.S. to become a soccer powerhouse. But it's hard to do with a crappy league; so MLS is just trying to get better.

Beckham is still one of the best crossers and takers of free kicks in the world, but NOT one of the best PLAYERS anymore. He doesn't have the pace to star in any of the big leagues (England, Italy, Spain) and is currently the 3rd string option on the right side at Real Madrid.
This is a ridiculously high priced PR stunt that will not pay off. He is an international pretty-boy celebrity, with a Spice Girl for a wife, but there's not enough substance to his game to excite people about soccer. It's not like your getting someone with the dazzling skills of Pele or Ronaldhino - dribbling through 6 guys, flipping the ball over his head and then drilling a shot from an impossible angle... people would turn up just to see what they would try next and how bad they'll make the other guy look. Beckham is just a guy who can place a pass real well and once in a while bend a free kick in from outside the area.
Don't get me wrong, I am not a Beckham-hater. I appreciate all he did in helping bring so many titles to my team - Manchester United. I just don't see how he'll become the messiah of soccer in the U.S. and justify a $250 million contract. He may be a regular in People Magazine and on Entertainment Tonight but you'll rarely see him on Sportscenter.

I'd make it a long if the other player was trying to insert something into my backside.

Here's the simple truth about soccer in the US, Its a substitute sport to keep the chicks off men's back and for Mom's who don't want their little boys in a contact sport cause they may get hurt. It turns out prep boys that sport polo every thing were that ridiculous prep haircut of the moment and attend Ole Miss and join frats. The good new is their may be hope for it yet here cause of all the wetbacks, err....... hispanics.

Beckham actually played quite well this past year in the world cup despite some unwarranted criticism. It is often common for players his age to hang up the clets so to speak with their national team and let the younger guys have their turn. And as someone posted earlier, he will put rear ends in the seats and help the MLS......at least that's what they are hoping.
