Best time to get a dog?

I am in the market for a dog or I will be as soon as I get out of this small apt and get into a house. I have wanted one for years but didnt want to keep one pent up a college apt. I was wondering if any of yall had some feelings on the best time of the year to get a good duck dog. If I got one now it probably would it be ready for next season? I wouldnt think so but hey I am new to this.

Get one when you are ready and you get the litter that you feel most comfortable wtih. I.E. litter owner, parents traits, titles, etc. Don't ever rush yourself into a pup saying I need him to be ready by such and such a date. Get the puppy that best fits you, and when he is ready to hunt go for it.

I agree wholeheartedly whith Jeff. Getting a new hunting buddy or future hunting buddy is a big step. Worrying about whether he/she will be ready for next season should be last on your list. Your first priority should be which litter to pick from- pedigree, temperment and performance of sire and dam. Waiting for the right pup from a good reputable breeder or kennel will reap great benefits. good luck!

two things about getting a puppy, do not buy one out of the newspaper classifieds and make sure you have done the background work on the pedigrees.

When you think you have found something then post it up and there are alot of guys on here that would give you an unbiased opinion of the breeding.

And remember all breeders/trainers have someone that does not like them and will openly bash them.

This is a good time of year to get a dog to have him trained well enough to hunt with you next season. BUT!! just like everyone else said, be careful and make sure you check the backgrounds out of BOTH sire and dam!! I don't agree with the classified thing said earlier, you could find a good dog in the classifieds just be DARN sure you check out the pedigree FIRST!!! STAY AWAY from dogs with alot of CH titles in it's background. Yea, it means Champion, but the WRONG Champion. THose are show dogs and they would probably run from a crippled duck and probably can't swim for chit, they are pretty though!
