Heavy Rainfall Ducks

OK - I have reversed my opinion on duck movement in heavy rain. I hunted Friday afternoon ahead of a heavy front and did very well. Ducks were sucking into the spread and really fighting wind hard to get in there. Understand that this was prime time for birds to come off of the river and feed combined with new birds ahead of the front. Lightening was even present to the south and west. Fella's - we flat smoked them. I think that the combination of the heavy front, new ducks and time of day did it - the stars were aligned so to speak.

We killed 18 in middle of that monsoon Saturday in flooded cypress. Then spent an equal number of hours burning up the dryer and wader dryers at the camp. Have I mentioned that I will NEVER buy any "hunting coat" that does not have a waterproof hood..... :wink:

I will NEVER buy any "hunting coat" that does not have a waterproof hood.....

Likewise; During that monsoon Saturday morning was one of the best hunts that i have ever experienced :D :D

I agree, i've had some great shoots in the pouring rain. What's really interesting is - how do ducks see where they are going flying at 40-50 mph in the pouring rain. Have you ever stuck your head out the window of a fast moving car in the rain to see what its like to try to see ahead? They must have a type of nyctating membrane in their eyelids. Whatever it is - what an amazing adaptation for inclement weather and possibly seeing under water.

I will say that we killed 14 this past saturday while hunting in the rain.. we hunted a flooded bean field.. 2 of the 14 birds were banded.. 1 greenhead and 1 snow goose.
Did you MOTORBOAT!!???
