When hunting at the scatters you will only see about two or three Leflore county vehicles and everything else is out of staters and out of county. Most of the out of staters will try to set up right on top of your spread. The first cople of ducks that come into the decoys they pick up and leave.

Well so far, there's been 4 public places mentioned in this thread. There's been several complaints about over-crowding and how idiots have no regard for anybody else.......and the outa-staters and locals have been blamed for most of the wrong-doing......and yet, people keep spilling their guts about these places on the internet and wanna blame everybody else 'cause their hunting experience sucked. Go figure!

People that want to 'appear' 'in-the-know' always show just how LITTLE they REALLY know about duck hunting when they spill their guts about a place to hunt on the internet........it don't take but ONE sentence on here, to tell whether a guy is good for duck hunting in MS or a sorry 'pimp', whorin' our public land out to anybody they THINK will remember yo cute little handle and gonna thank you for puttin'em on such a hot spot, crawling with other idiots.

Ya'll are just as much to blame for the problem......so if you really wanna bitch at someone, go stand in front of a mirror and let'er RIP! No, on second thought, fire-off at someone that gives a damn enough to TELL you you're screwin' yourself and everybody else that use to enjoy a little solitude. I have to agree, somewhat, with Anat. on this point. But, the number one culprit of overcrowding on public land is the incredible growth in popularity of this sport. That is a double edged sword in itself. On one had it had generated a lot of new interest and funding at many levels; the other side is that for some of us who have been doing this for 20-30 yrs., we no longer have it to ourselves. For you younger guys, you have no idea what a splendid isolation I hunted in there at all the good spots of public land in the late 60's through the mid-80's! The complaint then was about the "Jackson folks" that were coming to hunt the locals' places. But, being from out of state currently and hanging out occasionally with folks who are duck hunters here in GA, you have no idea how closely they monitor this site for tips for their trips out there. Do you really blame them for paying attention to such an incredible site that all of us enjoy and use ourselves? Nothing excuses the poor sportsmanship anywhere; but I don't hold that poor sportsmanship is the sole domain of out of staters. I believe I have seen about an equal portion, no matter the origin of the truck tag. Don't really care where you're from, it is incumbent on us all to demonstrate what we say is important to us in terms of attitude and behavior. If we don't do that, we all deserve a paddle smackin'!

I guess it's best not to say anything, good or bad about public hunting land. Saying that's it's overcrowded means it's good without having to say so.

Heck, I want to come check out a spot in North MS that was discussed recently. I've never been to it before and don't know where it is located. But I heard that it has hunters behind every tree so it must be a good area. Just the road trip kind of thing that I'll be looking for if my regular areas cool off. Why not?

Well, to emphasize the point........take a look at threads having to do with 'location'......they typically recieve the most 'views'. This one drew more attention than the appropriate use policy. Look down the page a bit.....at "seen any ducks?".......another 400+ readership.

I just got a copy of the article Keith was referring to. It includes a section on 'Tips fo First-Timers'......says......

"If I were going to hunt Malmaison for the first time, I'd talk to some of the local hunters and get good maps from both state and federal government." ........."I'd learn the access points to the area and use a GPS receiver to mark spots where the ducks were landing. Then I could find them the next day before daylight."

But then, a moment of redemption came when the author closed with......

"Always respect the other hunters. Don't get into a position where you're going to mess up their hunting and visa versa. Try to find spots where no one else is going to interfere with your ability to take ducks."

Well that's easier said than done, from what I've heard about some o' these places, but at least the point about consideration for others was addressed.........and if you listen to local hunters, you better be pretty adept at personal assessment.......to be able to distiguish information that is realiable from that, offered by someone who's pumpin' you fulla 'sunshine'.

This is the first time I've opened this topic, The reason is I have know interest in public hunting, I've not even opened the 1st page, I went to the 2nd page to start reading.

I now do unguided hunts, just because I've gotten so many request. I know now why.

There is no douth about this internet opens up so much information about hunting in Miss.

Delta, I wish more guides around here would do that. Offering unguided hunts. I would much rather spend my money that way, than on a lease. I could spend my money with a handful of guides and not get locked into the same spot every day.
