How to buy a duck call

Postby Meeka » Wed Nov 13, 2002 11:24 am

Somebody help me out, ok? If you want to make an important decision like which duck call to get, what do you do? How do you decide which one is best for you. Don't calls sound different to some extent depending on who is blowin them, ie - some folks like single, others like double; some like to blow a lot of air, some not; some have deep voices and some not?

I was at a certain location that has a new store and was told not to blow; that if you blow, you buy. I can understand there may be some good reasons for such a policy: 1 - germs, 2 - if you blow the expensive ($60)duck call and it sounds like crap, maybe you don't think it is reasonable priced.

On the other hand a good gun must "fit", a car must be test-driven, a woman must be courted, . . . . and a duck call must be blown. Am I wrong?

By the way, the dont have Winchester shells (read drylok) or Ace anchors, but do have G & H for $84.95, which I did get, and they might not aggresively wait on you, even if you are wearing a suit.

If they won't let you blow the call before you buy it, go somewhere else! Most hunting stores I've been to will let you get on one or two if you're stuck between them. One store inparticular I know of up here will let you blow their "good" calls if you want to and they usually clean them before and after you blow them. Don't mess with people who won't let you test drive your car. Go across the street! The best call is the one that suits you the best, no matter if it's $12 or $150.

I just got back from mossy oak and they let me blow every call that I wanted to. I was very impressed with the new Wiley acrylic call. The guy said that it was a competition call, but it sounded like a timber call to me.

I'm real partial to Southern Game Calls. I've used Greg Hood's calls as long as I can remember. Blows wet and won't freeze up. But if they won't lest you test drive go somewhere else. Most places keep demos that they clean before and after.

You southern game calls guys, how do those calls compare to RNT? I've never blown a southern other than the one they give you for joining DU, but that's just a little cheapo call. I've been sold on RNT original acrylic, but I hear a lot of people talk about these Southern calls. Are they pretty versitile up and down the scale? I may have to go try one out.......

Personaly i think that the little joel is probalby the best call that greg makes. But iyou have 2 options on buying these calls you can get it in acrylic or coca bola . I would have to say that i like the wood call best of all.

The majority of the greg hood calls are field calls. They are very loud and mainly top-end calls. I have a lot of trouble getting anything to happen on the bottom end. I've blown the greenhead and the timber talker call and struggled some. I dunno if mossy oak will take those SGC duck calls out of the package for you to blow them or not. All of the one's in the case are high-end acrylics.

If you have trouble on the low end try the new"poison" call. It's a double reed with tuning holes like the "Wench" I think its 40 bucks.

I was at The Mossy Oak store in West Point the other day and they let me blow every call I wanted to. They even took the Hood calls out of the package and let me blow them too, so if you boys buy one over there in the next few days and you taste a little Levi Garrett on your brand new, straight out of the package call then you know who to thank.

Back to Meeka's question........If you're talkin' about the store I think you're talkin' about, well, I was in there too and they let me blow the calls. Maybe you got to have a cheek full of Levi before they'll let you crank down on 'em.....

Southern Game Calls...........I bought a cocabola Nasty Boy, Greg tuned it himself but I like it less every time I blow it.........tried an acrylic Little Joel at West Point and liked it alot, although not enough to buy it.......what was it that GC said a while back--"I'm one duck call away from a divorce"--I can relate........... 8)
