Mississippi,
Good to hear from you, I hear everything is going well with the bride to be

Didn't you know Askew was a local boy WMA. You got to get in with the home boys or you will get yo butt whooped!!

They love those big SUV's to be parked around up there.

Not a whole lot to report. You can get a satellite image off teraserver if you know how to, and that's about as good as it gets.

I hunted Askew pretty regularly 5 years ago, and it was a good place until every other yahoo in N MS learned they pump water during the season, went downhill fast. I know of a good spot back in the cypress that must have been quite a good producer in its day, judging by the old blinds back in there. Most are made with materials you can't even find anymore, but have deteriorated beyond use. My guess is they are 30+ years old, and it took quite an effort to get those materials back there, so it must have been worth it to someone at some time. There are cypress stumps in there 15 feet across, large enough to hold four or five people.

Nowadays the hunters are as thick as molassas on the weekends. Just when you get a group to work, someone goes to shooting and flares them off. If you are into woody hunting, this is a good spot until about 1 hour after shooting time, then the birds figure out what's up and roost. Shuts off like a faucet. Your best bet is during the week, and then try to distance yourself from the crowds.

I haven't hunted there the past two seasons after being frustrated with so many people in there. I have driven down a couple of times to see if they are still there, and I think this past season I counted 16 vehicles in the main duck hunting area. Too many for me.

If you go to Askew plan on dove hunting I have never had any trouble there as far as fighting.......I have gotten a few dirty looks for being the first in some of the better holes and coming out with a limit heh. But your right it is crowded VERY VERY crowded even during the week. You'll be fine long as you respect other hunters don't crowd and don't try to work birds that are working another spread use some ethics as far as shooting, crowding and don't sky bust and nobody will have a reason to get mad at ya heh (not saying ya'll don't have ethics heh)

Askew is not a MDWFP WMA. I think it belong to the Corps. The use of WMA in its name will make one believe it is managed by the MDWFP, but it is not.

Askew is run by the Corps. I believe it is managed by the Arkabutla impoundment. You can to the field office by the dam and get a map.

Askew....hmmm....hunters behind every tree....skyblasters....not to mention people pass shooting woodies every 10 seconds (I'm guilty!)....cypress knees....rabbit hunters....deer hunters making drives (through flooded woods nonetheless)...1/2 mile walk in and out...sounds like most public land in MS.

mississippi---my home town is Crenshaw. My mother still lives there. I have been hunting askew since before the COE built levees around the woods and put in the first pump. It really did used to be a first class duck hole until everybody found it.
Believe it or not the deer do get off into the water to get away from the hunters. Got a good friend that hunts there almost exclusively and he swears the best deer hunting is along the waters edge. He also kills his share of ducks there when conditions are right. He works for Plumley Rubber and spends every day in the bottom scouting, even in the summer.

askew can be some great hunting it is crowded but most of the people that hunt down there dont really put any effort into it so in turn if you get out and do some scouting you can kill ducks most of the guys that hunt down there never do any pre season scouting they just get there go to the first place they come across throw out a dozen deeks and call non stop all day. its funny to me. last year was a bad year everywhere including askew but i have had some of my best hunts ever down there. when the ducks are there u cant beat it in some places but u cant just go out there blind and expect to kill ducks. do ur homework and u can kill ducks at askew

Judge...last time I went there they didn't have cards that you fill out. I don't think they have that there unless they just put it in place this year. Remember this is Corps land, not a WMA.
