pitiful paint

Postby Deltaduk » Wed Nov 15, 2006 11:13 pm

bought some ghg decoys after the end of last season[got a good deal on them]. I left them in the box all summer, took them out of the box they looked fine, put 2 coats of clear coat on them, cause their "history" .strung them up and bagged them last week.decided to take 3 out and make a jerk string.and the durn things done started chipping !!!I'll be at avery store tomorrow. sure hope they replace them.
I know that some of u guys have had this problem in the past,is there anything that can be done to prevent the chipping? or just don't buy ghg decoys, deal or not.

Call Chris at customer service (901) 324-1500. He also frequents this board.

So did the paint just fall off in the sack or what? I have dozens of GHG dekes and haven't had a paint problem other than normal wear and tear.

I have never had a paint problem with mine either and i have over 5 dozen or so. I just always put a polyurethane clear coat on them right when i get them. Gives them some protection and a little exrta shine in the sun.

Are you guys really putting a glossy coat of poly on your decoys. Don't they shine too much?

You want your dekes to shine. Live ducks shine on the water big time.

Hey feather, Krylon makes a poly flat clear coat I am putting on mine. If you don't like the shine, this is what you want.

I've never coated mine with anything having never had a chipping problem. Thanks for the advice though...I'll look into it.

paint

Postby Deltaduk » Thu Nov 16, 2006 10:57 pm

talked to a fella named chris at avery.told him about my problem,he asked me if I had the receipt ,which I do not.also asked me what type of keel they had.told him they were water keels. bought them at sportsman's warehouse in memphrica [they were on sale] back in feb.
he said that since I had no receipt there was nothing they could do.he said they quit making water keels afew yrs ago.don't know how they ended up at sportsman warehouse, but that is just my luck.
I did put 2 coats of poly[clear coat] on them right out of the box.been doing that for a yrs.
jusy my luck,I ended up with last of the crappy decoys .learned my lesson on this one, sometimes a gooddeal aint about sh*t.
I even told him that I was willing to bring the decoys up to there office and he would be able to tell that the decoys were brand new and never been in the water. but he said there was nothing he could do. looks I'll be doing some painting after season,'cause I sure aint got time now.

Even the Higdon's I bought that had flaking paint were only under a 1 year warranty and you had to show your receipt before they would handle the problem.

It is pretty much standard procedure to have a receipt when you return something.

That is how companies keep from "making good" on their warranties. That is why I pay extra for tools from Sears or most stuff from LL Bean. They have never asked for receipts, they just make it right.
