Plant the wheat, and sweeten it up through the season with amonium (SP) nitrate. I quit planting ryegrass years ago.........they hammer the wheat plots hard.

After it gets a little tall it gets bitter but you poor the amon nitrate to it it gets the sweetness back.

I sell food plot material about 20 to 40 ton's a season ( wheat, rye, oats, triticale, cearal rye, greens, rape, ect.. to many to list) any way wheat and rye are found not to be a deers favorite. They are green and they look good, thats about it. Both are low in nitrogen so deer dont favor to them they oats are a great substance along with some cearal rye or some triticale and throw in some rape......

Bigdawg that is a misconception. Oats are not as winter hardy as wheat, but they will not be completely killed out by frost. We've planted oats on our place exclusively for years. The deer there will walk through wheat to get to oats. The problem that most folks have with oats is that they plant them too early and they probably get too big before the first frost. They're basically like wheat. If they start to joint before first frost, you will have winter damage.

ryegrass is cow food, wheat on the other hand is a good choice. While oats are my favorite, wheat has it's place later in the season, and it does have good nutritional quality, just not in the younger stages as does oats.
Are we gonna get wet?

Buck Forage Oats is far superior to rye and wheat in my opinion, deer will walk across 5 miles of ryegrass to get to a little oat patch. I always mix in some clover and some austrian winter peas. Got to plant plenty of the peas, deer love them as they are coming out of the ground.
