Boat Registration?

Postby Duxnbux » Wed Oct 09, 2002 7:23 am

How do I register a boat that I received in a trade. They say you need a bill of sale or proof you paid sales tax. What do I need?

To my knowledge, you simply fill out a registration card with the numbers currently on the boat and send in.

They will want some sort of documentation. Just get the previous owner to write you a bill of sale. Make it for 1 dollar or something like that. They are sticklers about getting you to pay sales tax. (I know, from 3 boats, about the sales tax thing)

This should work. Once you get this, you should be able to use the old numbers on the boat to get it registered in your name.

Good luck.

If the boat doesn't have old numbers, they can use thye serial number on the boat with the Bill Of Sale. Also - If your boat is like mine with a replaced transom, the serial numbers are gone. I had to get a new serial number issued by the MS Dept of WP&F. They gave me a sticker with the new serial number on it. Give them a call and they will tell you what to do.
