He is. I've worked with him in the past.

I'm willing to bet there is more to big oak's story than what is posted here.

I heard last spring that I wrote a woman a ticket for fishing w/o a license while she was sitting on a pontoon boat, reading a book, with no fishing pole.

Boy, that would make you mad as a hornet to hear that about me, huh?

Truth be told, she had a jig pole in her hand when I pulled up. She was fishing out of a 16 foot boat and had caught one crappie. Her husband lied and said she had a license, but the woman admitted that she didn't.

Ain't rumors a booger? But I'll bet everybody that has heard the pontoon-reading-a-book story thinks I'm a son-of-a-gun.

I got a ticket from a fed warden several years ago. I won't go into detail but let's just say they had us on tape. Sidney Key taught me a lesson that day. He could have been a real booty but he was nice and taught me more of a lesson that way than if he had been hard about it. To this day I owe him for setting me on the straight and narrow. Thanks Sidney!

I have learned some valuable lessons. Never, ever have over the limit in your posession at any time. Never pick up or carry anyones doves or ducks for them, even your best friend. Also, I will never hunt at a public pay hunt again or hunt with people I do not know. Only hunt fields you prepare yourself. That way you know you are legal. I wish I could remember the name of the fed in the story I told. There was a thread on here about him a couple of years ago. He had been accused of entrapment in another state (Texas I believe).

I totally agree that they are over worked and underpaid, but there are some of those guys that should flat out be hung for abuse of power....

my case was in starkville, while I was a student, back in 99.....some of you may know this story....guys were hunting ducks out of season....at 'the cabins' almost every day.....wood ducks on the roost....one afternoon, a friend of mine and I walked down to the lake dam... IN STREET CLOTHES to show me where he hung a lunker bass....2 guys, which we knew, walk right past us decked out in camo with shotguns.....IN THE MIDDLE OF OCTOBER....we stood at the damn and they were at the other end of the lake blasting away.....ON VIDEO....hello! you are on candid camera!.....feds, sheriffs, and local greenies show up....put those two in cuffs and ask "where are your two other buddies?"....we had left the dam when they started shootin so we wouldnt get sprayed....to make a long story long....they also wrote us a ticket for hunting ducks out of season, no state stamp, no federal stamp....which was odd...i was in shorts, long sleeve white tee shirt, drinking a beer, carried no gun....and had spaghetti on the stove for the 5-10 minutes i was 'supposedly' hunting......

you want to talk about pissed.....i dont remember the guys name who was a fed, but he was out of texas.....wanna talk about abuse of power??? i hope this guy gets his one day.....i wouldnt spit on him if he was on fire....he abused his power, and I took advantage of being related to a game warden.....i didnt pay one red cent for any ticket and they were all taken care of.....

To answer Big Oak's question on of them was Bob Oliveri, can't remember the other guy's name. There were also 4 state wardens in the field at the time hunting also. Everyone was told when they enterd the field that they might be checked. Yes there was more to the story but I won't go there. But let me say this: there could have been a lot more tickets issued if they had gotten real mean! I know I was one of the host!

Why should it? The vast majority of hunters manage to abide by the law, and frankly I'm tired of the ones who don't using an "over-eager" warden as justification for breaking those laws. Last time I checked, wardens don't make the laws, they just get paid too little to enforce them. I've hunted the last twenty years in Mississippi, almost all of it on public land with the exception of the last two years. Yet, I've not once had an encounter with a warden that was anything less than professional and almost all were downright friendly. Do I have some sort of moveable force field around me that keeps the evil wardens that are just out to ruin a good ol' boy's day away? It's not hard to count to six ducks or fifteen doves. It's not hard to make sure you're not hunting a baited field. It's not hard to carry out your own ducks or leave wings on 'em or throw back a nine and a half inch crappie or let a spike walk. I would imagine that the vast majority of people on this site have a pretty conservative view of crime. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time and all of that. Well, the idea that that kind of philosophy should apply to everyone but them and every crime but hunting violations offends me as a sportsman. If you can't respect the resource enough to follow the damn laws, then take up golf.

There, I'm offa my soapbox.

Whoah there mottlet! Looks like I struck a nerve. Never been ticketed by the man but I have been checked. I know some fellas that were on his chit list and frankly SOME of them deserved it....I'll leave it at that.

As far as abuse of power goes....some of the folks on this thread are right on point. I personally don't like being approached like I have broken the law by an over assertive butt hole wearing a badge. For instance, two years ago in an un-named location a Fed busted up in the parking lot of the motel near our lease. In the process of the rush to the lot in his truck - he runs over a fellas black lab. He gets out of his truck as if nothing happened - no pitty for the hunter or his dog. He checks everyone like he is some billy bad ass and guess what - not a legit violation in the bunch.

He did manage to confiscate a red head thinking that it was canvas back AND issues a citation to the hunter in possession of the bird.

I welcome any warden to check me anytime - and you know what? I'll show them the utmost respect everytime - even if they are lacking people skills. I appreciate what they do and I am happy that they enforce the laws that are designed to protect the resources that we all love so much. I spend at least an hour every weekend of the season talking to the local wardens around my lease. They are great guys.

As far as those who bitch and moan about a HIP permit, left my stamps at home, toting ducks for a buddy, watch was off by 3 minutes, accidentally shot one over, etc, etc, etc...well even good people screw up sometimes and there are consequences. Deal with it and move on.

BUT there are instances where a violation has occurred and the warden is extremely polite. I have received ONE citation while hunting in my life. I was deer hunting with my then 5 year old son. We were in a shooting house on a green patch at the old lease in Leflore county. No deer seen that AM but it was a priceless moment with my son. As I am walking through the cotten field back to the truck, I see an older state warden walking towards the stand. I flagged him and he turned and walked to us. He greeted both me and my son and asked my boy how he enjoyed the hunt and carried on a conversation with him. He then pulled me aside and said "I am sorry to ask you this but were you aware that you are hunting over a corn feeder?" I had no idea - another member had placed a feeder 10 yards inside the woods on the far end of the food plot. WHY I don't know. Why plant a foodplot and then spoil it with a feeder.. I would have not hunted the stand had I known. By the way - my son never heard any of this conversation. He didn't want my son to think that his father had done anything wrong. Anyway - he walks with us over to the edge of the field and sure nuff - feeder. Discretely he asks for my license and stated that he believed that I honestly didn't know BUT he had to write the ticket. I didn't argue - he was right.

I thanked him for being a gentlemen and offered him a cup of coffee. He declined but thanked me anyway. I went back to the camp - talked to some members - one fessed up and handed me $100 and then went and removed the feeder. I went and paid my fine in Greenwood the next week and was done with it. Now - that warden was someone I admire.

That is a good story. I bet most are like that with the few asswipe stories being halftruths and lies.
