QUESTION #1: I have had my choc lab to the vet prob 3 times over this past summer. He has been on VERY EXPENSIVE shampoo, oral medication, you name it. I can't seem to get rid of the dry skin and semi-bald spot on top of his back right down by his tail. I have religiously given him shampoo treatments and oral medication w/ no avail. Any suggestions besides just leaving him at the vet for a month.?? Thats what I am considering seeing as how I can't fix it on their advice maybe they can do it.

QUESTION #2: Somebody please tell me why frontline does not work very good? That stuff is also expensive and my dog still has fleas. In the summer time i give it to him every 3 weeks instead of every month. But he still has a few fleas on him. Somebody told me that frontline only kills the flea when he bites the dog. What is the point then??? You wouldn't want a mosquito spray that only worked after you got bit would you???

QUESTION #3: Anyway I am fixing to order a bunch more frontline b/c i just used my last dose. Any suggestions on where to get cheap pet medications? My vet usually gives me great prices, but i will prob order off the internet for convenience reasons.

On question one it may be a fungus check with your vet if it is you can use an athlete's foot medication and it will clear it right up. The hair will start to grow back in a month or so.

On question two, I tried Frontline on my Choc. Lab. Two things occured: when applied, she would roll around for hours and as you mentioned, fleas were still there. I then looked at Advantage. The biggest thing I noticed with Advantage is that there is one extra weight class compared to Frontline. My lab fell into the topo dose of Frontline which was something like 50 to 100 pounds. Basically my 65 pound lab was getting a dose strength for a 100 pound dog, which in my book is way to much of a dose. It boiled down to it being to strong for her and she'd rub it off of her. When I apply the Advantage, she'll roll around for a couple minutes, shake and then go about her way. Fleas are gone within a days time too.

As far as buying online, search "Frontline Plus for sale" and you'll get plenty of sites to compare. Do the same for K9 Avantix

As far as cheapest price, I always compare price per dose since Frontline is often sold in increments of 3 and K9 Advantix in 4s.

we had a dog - golden retriever - that was that away and his hair kept falling out and hair wouldnt grow on his tail.. turns out he had a thyroid problem..

Frontline works fine on Sharkey but did not work real great on Meeka. I was convinced that her coat was thicker and that inhibited absorption of the medicine. Maybe some vet on here can say whether that is a possibility. Anyway, I convinced myself that I needed to shave a small patch between her shoulder blades and apply there and it seemed to do better, but also only seemed to work about 28 days. Again, with Sharkey we have no problems and the stuff seems to last much longer than a month whenever I forget, which is not as often these days.

Hey guys, a few things to consider.

Frontline works rather poorly on a dog with dry skin as absorption is impaired. The dry skin will have to be taken care of first. Don't overlook simple things like giving fish oil pills, eggs, omega 3 fatty acids, not bathing too frequently. It does seem to help to shave a patch if your dog has a thick coat. Frontline can't be applied until 2 days after a bath and dog can't get wet until 2 days after application to be most effective. Try putting it on right at bedtime and then putting your dog in the kennel. Again it has to do with absorbing the dose. Don't overlook the fact that the environment may have to be treated as well. Obviously you can't treat the woods but if you have flower beds and squirrels in your yard then you may need to spray your yard in spring and summer. Frontline needs to be used year around to be most effective. The flea does have to get it in his system to die and most effective is when the flea bites the dog but that's not to say fleas can't die from just being on the dog if you dose properly and use year around. Hope this helps.

I use Adams flea and tick shampoo as well as the Adams spray along with ant, flea and tick yard granules and have not have a problem with fleas.
