You can buy a Gaston custom wood call for $75.00.
These calls are some of the best made and produce some of the best sounds in a "meat call"

Echo moulded timber double or single reed. Rick Dunn will sell replacement reeds and corks that can make the $30 calls sound pretty much like the $80 to $130 calls if you do a little messin with em.

especially if you dip or chew in the blind.... Primos Timber Wench. Will run you about $14 and you can throw it away if you get some extra 'fiber' in the reeds...
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.

I got one of the Hydell's Cocacrylic Cajun Squealer calls last year for about $60. I like it a lot but I can't make it squeal. Does anybody out there know how that is supposed to be accomplished? Anyway, it sounds pretty good even without the squeal.
Can you teach me how to do that? I never could figure that out.

Get the call that sounds the best when YOU blow it. Go to the store and try out a bunch of different ones. Take somebody with you and ask for their honest opinion, because it's hard to tell what you sound like, yourself. Now, for my opinion: Arkansas style, single reed and wooden only. I have blown one call and one call only, since 1978, so I don't have any recommendations as far as current models, but there are plenty of good ones out there.
some of greg hood's calls (southern came calls i believe) sound fantastic. some of his sound like poo poo. primos wench sounds good in most situtions. big river game calls that they had at wal mart a couple of years ago sound excellent, but I can't find em any more. GC is sending me one of his old ones...thanks.
